Craig- I bought raw two color welding cable from a local electrical supply house, crimped the ends (Purchased from Advance Auto) using my NicoPress tool, soldered the gaps and slid a neoprene boot (ACS) over each end. Sounds like a lot of work but it was actually one of the easiest jobs I've had. I'm looking for a source for 4 gauge battery cable (red and black). I could use welding cable. B&C appears to only sell pre-made, terminated lengths. WayTek has a minimum of 100 ft. SteinAir doesn't list any. Many list 4 gauge Tefzel but that isn't what I want. I could buy a pair of jumper cables but I'm not certain on the quality and composition of the insulation. Any leads? -- Craig

Ben you need to read before flaming GEEZ I said steam (from the hot engine) could cause the coils to stop working. I never said high voltage causes steam but since they are a higher voltage the are more sensitive to moisture. Sorry I didn't clarify it in a way you would understand. And if anyone has a warp drive without the nickel edges I wouldn't fly thru rain as it will eat the tips up pretty fast. Jeff In a message dated 6/3/2010 8:05:33 P.M. It is a perfect way to wash it, to remove all the bugs and the rain is soft water so NO water spots !! I do have a very tight ignition system to prevent any moisture from getting into critical areas and I have flown through rain that was pretty darn heavy. YMMV............ As for the idea of high voltage creating steam,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Geez Ben Haas N801BH www.haaspowerair.com ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Afterfxllc@aol.com Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Flying on the edge of wetness Larry, I wouldn't fly any automotive type engine thru moisture as it will produce steam and that might cause your coils to stop working. The difference (as you are probably aware of) between a auto conversion and an aircraft engine is that the spark voltage is much higher in an auto type ignition. The greater concern is getting into too much rain. Id think this was possible, but a few of our Chapter 75 have flown in a car wash type rain that put them on the gages for a few minutes. Does anyone know the limits of the ignition system wires and spark plugs? I fly the Stratus Subaru in my 601 and am just now looking at my plugs and wires and wondering if theres much difference between wet aircraft plugs and mine. Anyone knowledgeable? Thanks for all the feedback on battery cables. For various reasons (like working in California and flying home to Utah where the plane is on some weekends) it was best to order on-line. I found a source of welding cable with a reasonable minimum length and good price: www.delcity.net. I will be crimping and soldering the lugs myself as I have the tools. -- Craig
