I accidentally ordered two 5/16 inch reams from Brown Tool. This is the re
am you need to making to make the final diameter holes in the attachment do
ubler for the 601XL wing upgrade. This is a "Chucking Reamer" that can be
seen on their web site. It cost me $27.70 and I'm willing to sell it for $
25 and pay the shipping to you (inside the US). The first $25 check I rece
ive takes it. Please contact me off list.
I just finished the reaming of my first wing attachment doubler yesterday a
nd it came out nicely.

Since your experience with reaming these holes worked out well, can you share some
tips with us. My first crack at this didn't go so well. I managed to ovalize
the web and am now trying again with a new rear web, spar caps and doublers.
Anyway:
1. How large did you drill the holes before reaming?
2. Hand held drill or drill press? If drill press, how did you ensure that the
reamer was centered?
3. Did you assemble the wing spars with the center section while reaming?
4. If the wing/center section wasn't mated while you reamed, did you ream both
front and rear web assemblies at the same time?
Any tips you would like to share would be appreciated. I'm new to this reaming
business.

OK my next problem.
You folks have always come to my rescue in previous jams. I am sending this
to several "lists" in hopes of getting some help. BTW there ares at least
two other projects in our local area that will be in the same predicament.
After three years of building and anticipating the sign-off of my Kit Built
Zenith CH 701 I find that the DAR that I spoke with three years ago who did
inspections in our area - Boise ID / Twin Falls ID - has hung up his hat and
no longer does the airworthiness inspections.
I looked - cursory glance - at the EAA list of inspectors and the closest
three I could find were: Salt Lake City Utah area, Eastern Oregon and
Montana - all some distance away.
I have been told, but not checked, the FAA office in Boise does not do the
inspection due to lack of time and also not the proper credentials.
What to do, what to do - I should be ready in a matter of weeks. Any ideas
of DAR volunteers that would like to make a nice trip to sunny southern
Idaho, would offer the possibility of great home cooked meals, lodging,
golf, trout fishing just about anything to get this done expeditiously.
Your thoughts please, drop an email or give me a call.

Hi Phil,
My suggestion is that you contact your local FAA (FSDO?) office and discuss
this with them. They should have two solutions to offer: Perform the
actual inspection themselves; and put you in contact with a local DAR.
Good luck,

So far I've only done one wing so far so I'm an expert! Here's how I did th 6
holes:
I clamped the doubler very tightly to the spar ensuring it can't move when I pound
on it. I then used a transfer punch to make some deep punch marks (like shown
in the photo manual). I used a Corvair exhaust log and a block of wood to
keep it in place while I whacked the transfer punch. I used a #40 bit, then
#30, then #12, and 1/4 in drill bits on a drill press. I finished with the ream
in a hand drill on the bench. If I had it to do over again, I would do one
hole at a time, using a 5/16 bolt to hold each hole in alignment while I punched
and opened up the next hole. I did all 6 holes at once, and at the end I
only had one hole that was too snug so I gently passed the ream through the old
holes and into the new doubler. Each hole now is nice and snug, and I can push
in the bolts without pounding them in.
