On March 11, 2004 I started building my Corvair Powered Zenith 601XL. T
      oday, N56DV took it's first flight. Whoo-hoo!!! I shouldn't have been
surprised by the heavy left wing, as I've been reading about it for year
s, but it was heavier than I expected on takeoff, needing full aileron t
rim. Otherwise, no major issues. Now, 39 1/2 more phase 1 hours to go.
Thanks go out to the Corvair and Zenith building communities. I've ma
de many friends over the past six years and each and every one of them h
elped me along the way. Special thanks to Woody Harris, Rick Lindstrom,
William Wynne and Doug Dugger. Pictures and video to follow.

      Jim,
My brake lines are in front of the gear since I just reversed the gear to move
it closer to my CG. The lines are attached at the fuselage with adel clamps but
I used the clear tape liken to propeller leading edge tape on the gear. It seems
to work very well. I used a strip about 6" long.
By the way - I would highly recommend putting the gear forward. It lifts off a
good 10 k slower and I can hold the nose off on landing.

I might 'suggest' that you keep very detailed records leading up to your
first flight and as good a writer Rick is he possibly could turn that i
nto a great magazine article on all the fine points of making that first
flight. If he just happens to document it in a video is icing on the ca
ke. I don't recall ever reading a detailed article in any magazine on th
e topic and I am VERY sure Rick can pull off a top notch one for Kitpla
      nes.........
Not that I am biased or anything . <GG>

To my friends on all the Matronics lists that have helped me in many
      ways over the years.
Some of you I have met in person, so many that I have never met but
      have been with me
        through this project since 2002.
I just want to say thank you for the encouragement, help, sound
advice, information, photos, drawings, parts, ideas, techniques, web
sites, lessons learned, stories, debates, Scotchbrite advice, humor and
      especially the friendships.
Many of you don't even know how much you've helped, but your
contribution and presence on the lists
        have been a tremendous help.
Yesterday, I had my inspection completed and received my airworthiness
      certificate. I'm surrounded by
many experienced pilots at Spadaro Airport in Long Island, NY to help
me through the next phase of this
adventure/dream/crazy idea. Thanks Matt Dralle for making it all
      happen here.
I especially want to thank these people from the lists.
