    Subject: Sub to Lycoming change
    From: "Dave New" <DNew@mcschaff.com>
The Subie has never let me down but has been a very high maintance engine. Have had to replace the rings twice due to loosing compression. I beleive the compression is caused by the Sub running hot. 220-230 F, If outside air temp was above 80 I could not fly without temp getting up yo 249F. . I have spent 7 years trying to get the Sub to run cool, I have installed a bigger radiator and two oil coolers and several changes to the cowl it finally is running at 180-190 but is again down on compression. I think it is at the point the cylinders need bored. Ram ingeering can do this but it is not cheap. With the cooling problem have fought coolant leaks, leaks were cured by rebuilding expansion and swill taks from heaver material. Also have had issues with bearings in the redrive thrust washer wearing with bearing end play continually needing adjusted. With carb on top the engine it requires fuel pumps, I use the facwet pumps recommend but have had problems with then vapor locking. There have been many many other small problems associated with the conversion. After thinking long and hard I deceided to just save my money and purchace a Lycoming instead of dumping more money into the Sub. All the fiddleing with all the small issues prevents you from flying. From all the stuff i have added to get the Sub to run cool it has gained concerable weight. I think I can get the Lyc installed at the same or less weight. With an avation collage in the area I will sign up for an evening class to go thru the Lyc, also with a Lyc installed i would be able to go to almost any FBO to get help with any issues. The Sub issues I was entirely on my own working out the problems. Anybody inrested in buying the Subaru complete firewall forward. Dave: If you do go with the Lycoming O235 check into POWER upgrades. There were a few STC done to increase the compression which increases the HP. The compression is increased by just changing the pistons. NOW! Being EXPERIMENTAL you do NOT have to purchase the STC, only the pistons. If you want more info let me know. Hey Dave, Where did you find your 0235? Did you buy or rebuilt? Thank you, Steve Freeman From: owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Dave New Sent: Sunday, October 24, 2010 7:02 PM Subject: Zenith-List: Lycoming install List Does anybody know of any body putting a Lycoming 0235 in a 601HDS (not a XL) if so I would be interested in hearing from. I have just obtained an 0235 to replace the EA81 SUB in my plane. I think I can get the Lyc installed at the same weight or liter, just wondering if anybody else has done this. Thanks Dave New 601 HDS taildragger N148DN
