For us lucky ones that live close to the Oshkosh airport, EAA for us is the entire months of July! It's fun to drive out and see hangars under construction, aircraft flying in early, and volunteers from all over the world working feverishly on the grounds. This years convention I feel has the promise of being one of the largest ever. Hotels filled up early this year due to the tremendous roster of exciting events. Special days of celebration for Burt Rutan, Bob Hoover, and of course our very special tribute to Chris Heintz and the family. As we get closer to the big event, I will put out another press release one week before the convention with maps, parking instructions, and times of events. On Monday, July 25th, EAA will honor Chris Heintz with a special presentation in the ConocoPhillips Plaza, formerly known as Aeroshell Square. One of each kind of aircraft design will be on hand for the ceremony and a special homebuilt review will follow. The presentation will take place from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Chris will receive his award from EAA around 10:30 from Tom Poberezny. There will be lots of press there and they want to talk to all Zenith pilots! Jerry Burke, well known television broadcaster from Wisconsin, will be doing interviews. I have a list of aircraft owners that have volunteered to place their airplane in the flight review. Next week, Sebastien will pick out the aircraft we will use. Aircraft will be chosen by type and pilot skills. The honorary banquet for Chris will be held on Wednesday, July 27th in the Nature Center, on the grounds of EAA. Sponsors for the event are the EAA, Contact Magazine, Aircraft Spruce, Sporty's Pilot Shop, Flight Crafters, and David Clark Headsets. Attending will be Tom Poberezny, Chairman of the Board at EAA. For tickets, send a self addressed stamped envelope along with $20 per person to Joe Scheibinger, 2809 Scenic Drive, Oshkosh, WI 54904. For more information contact Joe at backstagelive@gmail.com. So far we have 128 reservations! if you are planning to attend, I suggest you order your tickets by mail. Tickets will also be available at the Zenith trade show booth in the Homebuilders section just north of the brown arch. These remaining tickets will go fast! Attending this year's banquet will be Tom and Paul Poberezny. Lots of door prizes will be given away including a beautiful set of David Clark headsets, and IFR pilots course from Sporty's, and subscriptions to Contact magazine! For those of you that have purchased tickets by mail, they will be going out in Wednesday's mail. In the envelope, you will get a complete rundown of Zenith forums, auto parking for the banquet, directions, etc. The same information will be available in the Zenith tent on Monday's convention. I will also post attachments to the Zenith company blog on Friday. Most of you know from our blogs our youngest Zenith builder Sabrina. At the age of 16, she built a beautiful Zenith 601 and she has set her sights on an aviation engineering career. Sabrina will have the honor of being Paul Poberezny's escort for the banquet! When she first heard she was going to be Paul's wingman for the Zenith Banquet, she was at a loss for words. She had seen him many times around previous Air Ventures but never had the opportunity to speak with him. "What an honor! Cool!" She said. Russell Lepre at Flight Crafters has designed a great T-shirt and hat with the "Zeniths to Oshkosh" logo on it which he designed. Russell is donating a T-shirt to every person who flies into Oshkosh with a Zenith aircraft! If you would like to purchase a T-shirt and hat for this year's convention, go the Flight Crafters website at www.flightcrafters.com. So far we have over 30 aircraft that will be parking in the Zenith showplane parking and about 20 that will be in the aircraft camping area. If you would like to reserve a spot in showplane parking, please E-mail Joe Scheibinger at backstagelive@gmail.com or call 920-237-1450. William Wynne has volunteered to be Tom Poberezny's escort. Zenith Builders Mack Kreizenback, Ken Pavlou, and Larry Zepp will be volunteering their time in running the banquet. We still could use a volunteer photographer and someone with a video camera for the banquet and other events. If you would like to volunteer to help the Zeniths to Oshkosh campaign, contact Joe at 920-237-1450. Andy Schumacher is the manager of Gruenhagen Hall during the EAA. Andy has worked his tail off securing rooms for the Zeniths to Oshkosh project. Many of the rooms weren't even available when we asked him to support us. Andy deserves a great deal of thanks from all of us. How can we thank him? Andy has never had a flight in a small aircraft before! Would there be anyone who would like to take Andy up during the convention in their Zenith airplane? Have a safe and memorable trip to Oshkosh everyone. Any ideas out there about the suitability of this system and approximate cost? My wife gets freaked out about me flying and having one onboard would ease her mind (and mine as well). The HDS is not a delicate plane so long as it's built to original requirements. I'd not recommend the bird be modified for the BRS. Once you fly the 601HDS for a while, you'll see how very stable the flying envelope is. I feel very safe in the HDS because of its thick wing and large section construct. Any break in the skin for a BRS would be a serious compromise in the structure. This is my own personal opinion of course, that some would argue with, but you'll eventually feel like the plane is part of you after the first 20 hours. It's such a joy to fly! I suggest a search in the Matronics archives, you might find something there. Also, calls to ZAC and BRS might be helpful.
