Michael,
My airplane is a Zodiac 601XL. As such it has a 500X5 wheel and the double
3/16" aluminum nose gear fork. When my airplane was jambed into a pasture
berm at around 40mph, it bent the nose gear strut such that the nose gear
was flat under the fuselage, also bending the firewall and forward cabin fl
oor. The gear fork might have been bent a little, but it was intact. I'd
say it was strong enough.

Michel,
I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Thought it might be a way t
o lighten things up a bit especially since I fly paved runways 100% of the
time. Have you had a chance to do any weight calcs? I'm doing my annual ri
ght now and the tires need to be replaced. The ones called originally never
seem to last more than a year - the outsides start weather cracking from U
V exposure and while they'd probably last 2 years, I don't want to get stra
nded somewhere...
Thanks,
Don

Hi Michel,
The forks would certainly be strong enough with the reduced fork length,
even with slight
added width.

Thanks! And would you say the same for the main wheels?
For the lenght, i have to see. I fear that the ground clearance may become
an issue with the 68" prop.

The only problem with mains, long forks and that size wheel, you will be
hard pressed to find a wheel fairing that will fit.
If you go wide and stay long, the forks will probably be wobbly due to
the leverage of that long an arm. Suggest adding
a spacer above the fork to get the length you need for the prop.
