Hey Guys,
What should I use to seal the threads where the compression fittings screw
in to the master cylinders and brake calipers? Is this and plumbers tape or
a putty type compound. I thought I remembered seeing to definitely not use
tape.but I can't remember now.
Thanks guys,
Steve

I used a high quality tape from Swagelok for pipes fitting on my 601. I also used
Loctite thread seallant coumpound. In both cases, I stay clear of the first
two threads.

Hi Steve,
Don't use the Teflon tape as it will shred and complicate operation of your
brake lines and cylinders.
There is a white Teflon paste if necessary that works well. Comes in a small
squeeze tube from Locktite.

Hi Steve,
If I understand your question correctly, there should be no need for the
threads you describe to be sealed. A compression fitting seals on the
inside of the fitting rather than the threads.
I suggest you try assembling the fitting without any sealing material in
the threads. Try the brakes and look for leaks. If you find a leak
then you might consider using something like medium loctite to seal the
threads. You certainly don't want to use teflon tape since it is likely
to contaminate the system in question.

You have to be more specific.
Are you referring to the Pipe Thread? If so, then a very - very tinny drop
of liquid TEFLON pipe sealer.
Some have used TAPE DOPE - TEFLON TAPE - But many of those some have had
problems because of the tape breaking free and clogging the orifice. Simple
solution... Don't use it.
Now, if you are referring to the machine threads on the nut end - NOTHING.
You may want to put a drop of WITNESS PAINT on the
nut/thread to show if things are
And the Super Big Number One Rule - DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
The use of ANY compound or tape makes it very easy to over tighten. Do so
and you will be replacing the cylinder.

Hi guys,
Sorry for not being more specific.I thought you guys would know the part I
am referring to.
These are the brass fittings that ZAC supplies with the kit that screw in to
the Master Brake Cylinders by Matco.
Compression fitting might have been the wrong term.

Hi Steve
I have always used tape on all my fittings and with well over 4000 hrs on 4
planes I have built there is no problems. The reason it is taboo is people
were not using it properly and it did get into fuel/brake systems but if
used correctly it works well. Any sealant that is allowed to enter the
system is bad that's why I don't use liquid sealant. The main thing you ha
ve to
remember is not to apply any tape to the first 2 or 3 threads as someone
said before and wrap the tape away from the ends and you will be fine.
I'm also not sure why everyone has so much trouble contacting Bill Clapp I
just talked to him yesterday and I have never had problems with him as far
as parts and money goes. He did say people don't leave messages and if the
y
don't he has no idea they called so I would say leave a message.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the excellent explanation.
Was Bill Clapp the guy you said might have a Corvair available?
I decided to go with a new 0235 for a long list of reasons.
Thanks for all of your input over the past couple of months and sorry
nothing ever worked.

also. I am building my next 601 now and it will have a 0-235 on it also.
Bill did have an engine but I know how to deal with Bill but I am glad you
decided to not go with a Corvair as have I for a whole list of reasons
also.
