Pre-covering the area where one needs to write with masking tape solves this problem. ---- UHMW is very slippery, what makes it difficult to keep it aligned when clamping the material. Covering (all or part of) the contact surfaces with masking tape helps. ---- When painting, cover areas that are not supposed to be painted with masking tape (I heard this was the original use of masking tape, imagine that! :-) ) ---- Next installment: how to make a space suit out of duct tape.
