A galvanized surface creates an oxidation that prevents rust and paints from getting a foot hold. You could lightly scuff the surface. Then wash it down immediately with MEK. Followed by an immediate coating of self etching epoxy primer. Then a sealing coat of some other epoxy paint. How long will this paint job last? I don't know. OR you could lightly scuff the surface. Then wash it down with MEK. Then give it a spray coat of COLD GALVANIZE spray paint. Only available color - Gray. How long will this paint job last? I don't know. What should have happened would be - Scrap the galvanized steel and replace it with a 300 series stainless steel (302 or 304). And don't paint it. This way you have corrosion protection and a fancy shinny firewall, that will not need painting ever.
