Hey Gang,
I'm pretty new to the list but I'd like to share a tool I've found to be
quite handy over the years. I'm sure many of you know already and some have
probably shared it here at one point but anywho, it's called the Jawhorse.
It's like a saw horse and vise in one collapsable unit. Some great features
include; easy storage, very stable, almost all steel, the "vise" is foot
activated, the jaw will hold material up to 36" in width. It's awesome when
you need that extra set of hands, great for drilling metal and wood. You
can see it here http://www.performancetoolcenter.com/rk9000.html Scroll
down and there's a cool video.

Bill,
You weren't specific, so I have to assume that you are talking about an XL style
canopy on your HDS.? My XL drawings call out a Latch Casing P/N 1185K.? The
ZAC parts list for an XL canopy shows Non-Locking Latch Assembly P/N 6C4; and
Locking Latch Assembly P/N 6C4-1 Locking.

Bill,
I don't see
anything in ACS that closely resembles the ZAC inlet; and they are $20 to
$80.? The ZAC part is 6B20-4 and two of them cost $11.10.

Thanks for the replies.
I am actually looking for something that a non GPS user can learn to use fairly
quickly. The buyer for my plane asked me to buy him one. I noticed the 2000C
at ACS was $699. My friend Rick Roberts (of CH701-Suzuki fame) has one and
likes it.
What the buyer needs is something with a large screen that is easy to use.
I had an Airmap 300 back in the 90's and it was pretty good. It did lose it's
GPS signal on occasions. I read some comments on some of the lists where people
said their 2000C lost it's signal....
Just trying to get all the facts before I spend the gentleman's money.
Thanks,

Yes, it sucks, doesn't it. It is hard to make a hole in a predefined spot.
I don't know if a threaded bit would make any difference: the tool comes
with 4 collets, and they are just about the same in "wobliness level".
Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Tommy,
I'm afraid you are trying to live the impossible dream. GPS units
just don't come in easy to use. The number of issues the user must
understand and the number of choices he has just make this a device
with a really steep learning curve.
Last year I went to a safety seminar on using GPS. It was sponsored
by the FAA and AOPA Safety Foundation. It was mostly about using GPS
for IFR navigation, but many of the issues raised have application in
VFR flight too.
Perhaps the most telling point that I remember was about single pilot
IFR flight. This was a very common event a few decades ago. One of
my friends flew hard IFR often in his Globe Swift - a twitchy plane
with only 2 hours of fuel. He thought nothing of it. Today, single
pilot IFR is considered a safety hazard - particularly if you don't
have a working autopilot. The reason? GPS. These little gizmos
take so much attention that a pilot can't fly the plane and twiddle
the GPS at the same time.
Which ever GPS you select, I think you should plan on spending many
hours getting familiar with it. That way you can program it on the
ground before takeoff and when you need to do something to it in the
air you know exactly which button to push to get what you want.

Bill,
I cut the hole with a Dremel.? It was fitted with a special Dremel attachment that
has a center point and mounts the Dremel and cutter at a specific radius (Dremel
part no. 678-01 Circle Cutter & Straight Edge Guide) The cutter was a tiny
drum with spiral cutting edges.? I think the cutter is bit no. 194.? Worked
like a charm !
I used this same bit to do a whole lot of detailed aluminum cutting.? It will also
work on thin steel, but wears out rather quickly.

Larry,
I used two Plastic Eyeball Air Vents from ACS, $17.95 each in gray,
black, white or beige. These are connected to NACA vents on the side of
the fuselage, per ZAC, and connected via scat tubing. I installed a 120
mm square 12 volt muffin/exhaust fan, with a metal finger guard on the
rear of the baggage compartment. The muffin fan is p/n
707-GDA1238-12BB, cost is $20.12, Finger Guard is p/n 5912-LZ30, cost
$5.55 from Mouser Electronics, www.mouser.com.
I live in South Texas, 20 miles from San Antonio, so have several HOT
summers proof of concept experience.
Before engine start, canopy closed, turn on muffin/exhaust fan and point
left eye ball vent at my face. Slight breeze. Start engine, air is
now blowing nicely on my face/upper body. The air blowing on my face is
probably 95 - 100 degrees but it still cools. End of climb check list
has: Turn off exhaust fan. Before landing checklist has: Turn on
exhaust fan.

I must admit that the Zenith upgrade videos on their factory demo are good.
I can't wait to see the center spar ones.
I would really like to see the spar cap change out in person, esp. if anyone is
solid riveting the new spar cap.
I am driving from Chicago to Miami the weekend before Christmas and back the weekend
after Christmas. If anyone, by that time, has their upgrade kit in hand
and aircraft apart along the route, I would love to be a second pair of hands
for a few hours.
I don't have enough free time to do anything on my airplane until Spring Break.
By that time we should have a couple dozen flying and proving the new design.

For the first time in history, the FAA has suspended issuance of any new

airworthiness certificates to experimental light-sport aircraft (E-LSA) and
