Rob:
My tabs have a little wiggle in them and it is not noticeable in flight. I don't
remember having much play in any of the holes, but when you put it all together
and add up all the little play in each moving part (including the hinge)
it all adds up to a little wiggle. There's a good lesson or three in this that
I tell everyone building -
1. Drill a test hole in a scrap part and try it first,
2. Cut all panels a little large and test fit first (for plans builders) and
3. Do a test bend on the brake on a scrap piece before making the final bend on
a large part.
One note about the trim tab since I was flying yesterday and noticed this again.
It is hard to trim out for level flight with a quick touch of the button.
It is just that sensitive and maybe it moves too fast. If there were a way to
slow it down I'd probably try it. I use the standard RAC servo called out on
the plans.
My elevator tab is the large version that I re-made after seeing one at Sun-n Fun.
First one: http://www.cooknwithgas.com/3_23_03_Trimtab.jpg
Secone try: http://www.cooknwithgas.com/5_8_05_Trim.jpg
It works well and I wouldn't recommend flying without the elevator trim. I don't
use the aileron trim but I haven't flown without someone in the right seat
so we will see.

Yes. There is a stiffener attached under the fuselage here:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/4_29_06_BRS_Underside.JPG
It is also attached to the firewall here:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/2_19_05_Nosewheel.jpg
(See the two green stiffeners).
I'm sure there are many ways to accomplish the same thing. The rear harness also
connects to the bottom longeron via the step reinforcement here:

Take care,
Scott.

Subject: | Zenair Newsletter Calendar request |
Zenith-listers,
I will be assuming the responsibility of editor for the Zenair
newsletter a little later this year (coinciding with the newsletter's
renewal period). This is the official publication of Zenith Aircraft to
communicate with the builders and flyers of their products.
One of the projects on the slate is creation of a Zenith builder's photo
calendar which will possess some unique characteristics: it will
released for mid year (July 08 to June 09, for example) and will feature
photos of the creations of Zenith builders and flyers (aircraft!) This
calendar will also list the important dates of national fly-ins and
shows (don't we always need to plan before those dates creep up on us!)
So... I need PHOTOS of your current project (finished or not) emailed
to me... anything that might look FUN and wonderful displayed on a
hanging calendar.... I will choose at least 12 of them (maybe more /
multiple pics per month, possibly) Of course, anyone that gets their
picture chosen will receive a free calendar, and if you are already a
newsletter subscriber (you get one anyway) then we'll have to come up
with another prize.
Also, we are in need of stories, news and tidbits from around the world
related to all things Zenith (building, flying, shows, etc) so please do
not hesitate to submit them to me. If you dont like writing, I can
arrange to do an interview with you (so I do the writing!)
Please submit your photos and writings to my email: jon@joncroke.com and
we'll assume that if you send me a picture you are giving me permission
to use it in the calendar/newsletter.
Dont be afraid to submit wild and crazy photos, too... like your child,
pet, etc seated in/on your partially/completed aircraft.... no need to
have a show stopping paint job.... be creative!
I understand that not everyone is a newsletter subscriber (nor wants to
be)... part of my job is to bridge that gap by adding value (like the
calendar and other features).
Thanks for your support! (Send ideas, too)
Jon

Ray Allen has a fix for this:
SPD-1 ... SERVO SPEED CONTROL
This compact unit enables you to slow the speed of your trim servo to
suit your individual installation. Measures 2.0(51 mm) x .5(13 mm) x
.8(20 mm).

You could try making a voltage divider out of a couple of power resistors and feed
6 or 9 volts into the motor instead of 12. That would slow it down for sure.
It'd probably still be powerful enough to move the tab.

I want to go with a military theme too. Problem is, the 601 series doesn't really
lend itself well to that idea. Maybe it's the side by side thing.
Polished and with the flaps down and taildragger mode, maybe something like this
p-51 mustang polish/paint job would look good.

Just wondered if anyone has had any trouble getting their new prepunched/cut
front fuselage skins to fit right. Mine if I line up the precut spar hole then
the aft rivet line is aft of the rear attach plate which has to rivet to the
seat back channel which is forward of the attach plate also the baggage rivet
holes are off. If you get these right the main spar and upright angle rivet
holes are off 10 mm or more. I have measured and measured and I can find nowhere
I'm off. Just thought some others might be having problems with these new
skins. David Coberly

Subject: | Right wing completed |
Hello All,
I am plans building the 601xl wings and have just completed my
first (right) wing after starting on the wing with the rib form
blocks on 10/22/06. Plans building takes it's time but I have
learned a lot and except for the welding of the tanks and the
fiberglass wing tips made all parts myself.
The resulting right wing has the aileron with trim attached but
the flap has been removed. Further on the wing has a tip light
and strobe (no electronics), landings lights and the heated
AOA/Pitot tube. Internal surfaces have been treated (especially
the contact surfaces) with ZnCr. The total assembly weighted in
at 39.0 kg (or 86.0 lbs).
