OK - So it will probably do it on 100hp with spats and a few aerodynamic clean-ups... > Curious you'd build an HDS when the XL is the latest aircraft in the > Zenith series. Also, if the Zenith specs are to be believed, then the HDS is substantially faster per hp than the XL. The higher wing loading should also make it more comfortable in the turbulence that we regularly experience around here... The XL has very little extra to offer, unless it lives up to Zenith's performance figures more reliably than the HDS. Thanks for the info. My 601 HDS with 912UL and Arplast air adjustable prop will cruise at 120 mph IAS at 3500 ft. running 5300 rpm. I have some drag reduction, radiator and oil cooler in cowl and wing root fairings. I think that IAS is approx 5 mph too high by comparison with other a/c. Dave Austin 601HDS - 912, Spitfire Mk VIII

    Subject: flap question
I am getting ready to wire my flaps and have a question. According to my drawings 1)the "up" micro-switch should be 12mm from the rear of the motor housing; 2)the front of the "down" micro-switch should be 23mm from the rear of the "up" switch; 3)the front edge of the "down" switch should be 63mm from the rear of the motor housing. My switches have a set screw that has a sealant painted over to prevent movement and the distances are different. My distances are 1)17mm; 2)14mm; 3) 59mm. Since there is the sealant on the set screws I don't really know whether I should change this or not. Have any of you had this problem? Thanks in advance. Skip Perry Fort Myers, FL DO NOT ARCHIVE

I had to fine tune the position of the switches to work with my airplane, you will probably have to do the same since no two homebuilts are exactly the same. Justin- We'll know probably next year how an HDS performs vs an XL. My buddy Lynn Dingfelder and I both built up Corvairs; he has an XL while I have an HDS airframe. Although my basic airframe is a couple of pounds heavier than his, I'm going glass panel while he went steam gauge. He's painting, while I'm polishing. Should be really close in the long run, weight-wise. I must be getting optimistic in my old age. There was a long time I doubted if I'd ever get my project in the air! Good building! Skip, I am in the process of aligning and calibrating my flaps right now. I built according to the plans and instructions. It seems there are enough tolerances and variations that it simply doesn't all come together perfectly every time. I have had to move the microswitch blocks and the nylon plates where the actuator horn pins insert in the last flap rib. Don't be concerned. Even though they are "paint safetied", they are adjustable for a good reason. Jay in Dallas "Skip Perry" <sperry50@comcast.net> wrote: > >I am getting ready to wire my flaps and have a question. I bit the bullet today and decided to get an AC adequate to run a pneumatic drill. I ended up a Lowes and got the vertical tank 30 gallon belt driven model. The marked price was $384. It turns out it's a discontinued model, and I got the last one on the floor, with no manual for $100. I'm not saying anybody else can get this good of a deal, but if you are in the market for an AC, it's worth dropping in at Lowes. Ron

    Subject: Securing the Seats
    From: "PatrickW" <pwhoyt@yahoo.com>
While flying with a guy in an AMD 601XL, he mentioned that the seats can slide forward in a stall, resulting in some exciting moments as the seats interfere with the sticks (Dual Sticks) resulting in the inability to pull up until you get the seat slid back out of the way... Any ideas on how to secure the seats from sliding forward? I'd need to retain access underneath the seats. Velcro? Straps? What works for you...? Thanks, - Pat -------- Patrick 601XL/Corvair N63PZ (reserved) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=184951#184951
