Yes, painting it black is certainly an option. Right now my entire forward skin is painted gray. I guess one thing I did not add to my original post is that I do have a fit issue with the canopy and the skin down towards the rails. The canopy does not quite follow the contour here. I told Todd (Todd's Canopies) about the problem. He cautioned me about using a heat gun or hair dryer to bend the canopy in due to the possibility of crazing. If I do not decide to try and heat it, I was going to put some weatherstrip foam to bridge the gap (about 3/8"). Then I was thinking about putting some sort of rubberized tape along the entire contact surface covering both the weatherstrip and rubber deposits. Interestingly enough, the aft canopy seal contacts polished aluminum and the are no rubber deposits at all. Thanks, -------- David Gallagher 601 XL, working on final assembly. I also encountered the same problem, although with the help of many people. But I do not always feel satisfied. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=190226#190226

I have polished aluminum front and rear and the seal leaves no marks. Maybe the rubber is sticks to the paint more than bare aluminum. I would like to know what prop you are using with the O-200 engine. I have the Sensenich W68ZK-57G which I was told is what AMD puts on the factory plane. I am not getting the proper RPM with it. Wondering if I have wrong prop or an engine problem. Floyd Wilkes 601XL O-200 -------- Floyd Wilkes Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=190290#190290

Hi Floyd, I am no prop expert, but the one used on the Jabiru in the FWF from Pete is the Sensenich W64ZK-49. This is 4 inches shorter and has a pitch 8 inches smaller. Considering the engine has 30 percent more horsepower than the O-200, it sounds like you might have the wrong one. One issue to consider is the Jabiru turns more RPMs than the Continental so that might make a difference. Culver has a a nice prop calculator online at http://www.culverprops.com/pitchselection.htm. You might try it to see what prop you should be using for your engine and speed. Good luck, Paul XL getting close do not archive At 03:22 PM 6/28/2008, you wrote: >I have the Sensenich W68ZK-57G which I was told is what AMD puts on >the factory plane. Yes, tha W68ZK-57G is what's on my Zodiac. What kind of RPM are you seeing? I'm not having trouble getting up above 2600 in cruise flight at full throttle. I haven't paid attention to what it is on the takeoff roll, though; if you'd like, and I manage to commit aviation tomorrow morning, I'll take a look. -- Jay Maynard, K5ZC http://www.conmicro.com http://jmaynard.livejournal.com http://www.tronguy.net Fairmont, MN (FRM) (Yes, that's me!) Static rpm is about 2240. In flight it will not go above 2400 in level flight. It took a dive to hit 2700. My rate of climb tests today maxed out at 520 ft/min. Guess I better check out the motor. It is 0 SMOH and possibly could have a problem. Yes, static test is full throttle holding the brakes. Thanks for your information. I will check the timing of the engine. With a new overhaul, it is possible they have the valve timing off. Will check that. Does temperature have anything to do with the "pucker"? If I drill and rivet while the material is cold will it pucker when it warms up? Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=190342#190342

If there is someone who has not installed their Jabiru 3300 Cowl on their plane yet, could you give me some basic measurements. Width, length before trimming, height, etc. Also, would you measure the measurements from the inside if the cowl. I know the front is much narrower. What is the width at the very front. Subject: 1st fly in
Well, today I flew a Cessna 172 about 190 miles south to Grants Pass, Oregon and attended my first Fly-In. I specifically went because I knew there would be 2 601's there. I met Ron Asbill and his XL with a Jabiru in it. He answered a lot of questions I had. The second plane was an HD. Both were very nice planes. This was another completion of a dream of mine. I have always wanted to FLY to a FLY-IN and it was great! The air was really smooth. I wanted to go home via the Oregon coast, but when I got halfway there, I listed to the ASOS and it reported a 2,000 ceiling. I was at 5500 and could not see nothing below, so I headed home. It was great flying over my old neighborhoods and places where I grew up. I had a blast. With that part out of the way, the next part of the dream is to fly my own plane! It will be much cheaper than renting a Cessna! It was over 100 degree's here today and the density altitude was crazy for Oregon! I really expected a bumpy ride, but it was like glass once you got above 2500 feet. If your working on your license. Don't give up! It is so worth it!!! I have put in 20 hours this month alone!!!! I have to stop and pour the money into my little bird! It was my longest cross country yet. 4.5 hours and I a tired! Excitement does that to you! Everybody keep building, training and flying! You might try this method for removing rivets. What I do before removing the rivet head is use a rivet stem, ( have a lot of them) and tap it down into the center to push the stem away from the head. Sometimes it pushes right through. Grind flat the ends of the pull off stem and just hold it in the center of the rivet head and tap on it with a small hammer. Once the center stem is below the sheet metal surface, so the drill tip won't touch it, it is safe to drill. I only drill till the head comes free, then I use a drift or pliers on the back side to take the rest of the rivet out of the hole. I have had some luck also just using my automatic center punch and a backing block with hole to knock them out once the head is removed. -------- Ron Lendon, Clinton Township, MI Corvair Zodiac XL, ScrapBuilder ;-) http://www.mykitlog.com/rlendon Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=190347#190347
