Well done. Flying the 601XL by yourself is a great experience but very different
from when you have a passenger. After I land by myself, I have to slow down
quickly or take-off right away because it wants to fishtail and wander on the
runway - I suspect because we are so light just the plane and me. When I have
a passenger, it doesn't want to do this. I guess it has never been safe to
drive a three-wheeler at 60 MPH or so. I do my base and final at 80 mph and
let her settle at about 60 then cut power and apply brakes a little. I can lock
up the tires if I'm not careful.
On takeoff I pull back on the yoke ever so slightly at 60 MPH, then push back a
little forward after becoming airborne because she will try to point straight
up if I don't. I've hit the tail once and don't want to do that again.
Your airplane looks great - congratulations!

Hi Scott,
I wonder if you are taking off and landing at excessive speeds.
Your approach and normal initial climb speed should be approximately
1.3 times your stall speed. In an XL that would be around 50 mph (if
the stall speed is around 40 mph).
Your touch down speed should be very near the stall speed.
Aside from potential handling problems from taxi speeds that are too
fast, you also might be using excessive runway distance and brakes as
well as tire wear. The high speeds also might make your takeoff and
landing experience just a bit more exciting than they need to be.

At the numbers on downwind, I slow to 80 MPH with pitch and reduce throttle for
a 500fpm decent approximately. At this time I add two seconds of flaps or 1/3
travel and trim up for relaxed yoke pressure - carb heat is on at this time.
Corvair RPM is around 1800 to 2000.
I maintain 80 MPH until flare. I turn base at 45 deg. off the corner and add two
more seconds of flaps and more up-trim. On final I put in the last two seconds
of flaps for full flaps and maintain 80 MPH over the numbers with pitch.
At this time I am in full up elevator trim.
I use the throttle to control altitude and pitch to hold 80 MPH. Flaps come up
after touching down and elevator trim is cleaned up and carb heat is removed.
If I decide to keep going I go to full throttle, hard left rudder and pull
back slightly at 60 MPH and I'm in the air again. I get a kick out of it every
time I do this.

attitude indicator function. I have NO IDEA how well it works, but if has
any value as a tertiary backup, then it would justify the cost of the whole

me. I would like to hear from anyone who had tried it! I guess the question
is, "Is it better than the GPS-derived "panel" on the 396/496?

FWIW the guys at Aviation Consumer have successfully flown "light" IFR under
the hood for extended periods of time with the simulated six-pack on the 396
and 496:
"the GPSmap 396 has a GPS-driven flight instrument page that we have proven
is quite capable of serving as a gyro back-up in the event of a vacuum
failure"

Since we are on the subject, I have recently installed a FREE software
called APIC. It is great and free. It is not a demo, it works great. It has
a
wonderful moving map that shows terrain, roads, lakes, airports and more.
When you click on the airport, it will bring up all the information for the
runways, CTAF, tower information, etc. You can download it into a laptop or a
PDA. I have a HP 5915 with a built in GPS and it runs awesome! It also has an
altitude indicator screen that shows your ground speed, altitude, bearing,
etc. It looks a lot like a Dynon screen. Do a search for APIC Software and
check it out. For free, it is a great product. It has a demo mode to try
things out, even if you do not have a GPS module yet? Thought other people
might like to try it. 5 people from my local airport now have it working in
their plane as a backup.
