Hi Kev,
I'm using cushioned headsets to limit noise. They may not be as
fashionable as lots of padding, but they weigh a lot less.

A couple of ideas... 1. I tested (on a previous plane) a 3 blade prop vs. 2
blade and the 3 blade is definitely quieter. It also gave better climb but
slightly less top speed.
2. any soft material (fabric etc.) that is covering the large areas of sheet
metal will cut down on the drum effect. It doesn't necessarily have to be
thick and heavy. Fiberglass insulation covered with something is really
good, the thicker the better, there is a product called comfort therm from
Johns Manville that's really nice. It's very fine and doesn't have the nasty
qualities of regular fiberglass, like glass splinters and airborne
particles. On that note I just found, at Home Depot, an interesting product.
It's 1/8" foil backed foam with self adhesive on the other side, for
insulating ductwork. It didn't say if it's fire rated and I need to check
with the manufacturer (or buy some and try to burn it).
Also the canopy thickness and square footage has a big effect on sound
transmission. I don't think theres much we can do about the thickness and
the only choice on canopy is the 601 vs 650 sizes.
PS you can also buy some stuff from AS but it's really pricey.
