The gloop is often formed over time when some one has use a little grease or spray
( WD40) to put the pipes on or off with. with the heat and glycol a small
amount of the the rubber tubeing is dissolved.
Never spray wd 40 type of lube in the hose as this softens the rubber.
Hope this is of use

Normally recommend 2 years. try and use 40 to 50% mix with de ionised water. too
much glycole reduces the flow around the system and also not so good at removing
the heat.
Evans coolant is the worst if you run hot as this increases the temp by up to
20c.
Run normal coolant but DO use the 1.5 bar pressure cap to stop boile off.

Thanks for the informed replies. Can you help out a little more and
explain de-ionized water? If it is not available commercially, can it be
"made"?

Distilled water works just as well and should be commonly available.
Deionized water is just water that has been passed though a device
that removes the dissolved ionic compounds using electrically charged
plates and permeable membranes. The process is nearly as effective at
purifying water as distillation but requires less energy and can
quickly produce large quantities of purified water.

distilled water, but I don't recall seeing "de-ionized" water.

If you don't want to build Larry McFarland's simple and dirt cheap tension gauge
Spruce sells the Burroughs gauge shown in the Zenith pictorial for well under
$200.
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/cablegauge.php
Either way the pictorial shows the easy way to calibrate these.

I am aware of two recent accidents in Australia. One into the ocean off the
Gold Coast, and a later one on land. I presume that you are referring to
the second accident, since you say that it "impacted the ground." While I
have seen news reports about the Gold Coast accident, I cannot recall
whether there have yet been any government reports about it. Do you know of
any "official" reports?
The US NTSB issues a preliminary report, followed by a factual report, and
a probable cause report for each accident. I do not know much about how
foreign governments handle aviation accidents.
What reports are issued by the Australian authorities? Are those reports
available on line? If not, how does one obtain a report? What is the name
of the agency that investigates accidents and issues the reports? Do they
have a web site? About how long does it take for them to issue a report?
Thanks for letting me how your operate down there.

Here is another source for the Burroughs gauge:

..and here is a source for a less expensive gauge:

Did anyone else notice that the photos from the Euro Zenith post had cable swage

Does anyone know the comparable strength between the two and any pros or cons?

The Wick's cable tension gauge won't work for a Zodiac.? This gauge for 1/8" cable
has a bottom end of 100 pounds.? The Zodiac cables are from 22 to 40 pounds.

Here is another source for the Burroughs gauge:
http://www.aircraft-tool.com/shop/detail.aspx?PRODUCT_ID=3375D&ReturnPage=/shop/search_result.aspx?PageNo=1
..and here is a source for a less expensive gauge:

The problem with the Wicks gauge is its range:
"Ranges 3/32: 70-300lbs, 1/8: 100-500 lbs. 5/32: 140-800 lbs."

I understand that 6061-T6 is very corrosion resistant.? Therefore, I only painted
the fiberglass parts, invasion stripes and a little other cosmetic painting.?
I actually like the look of the "raw", unpolished aluminum.? Judge for yourself.

Jay-
The question is, what will it look like down the road, and in less
than ideal conditions like you experience in Texas? You know I love the
looks of your project, but you haven't experienced the snow and other
crap you get in the Northern areas. I'll have to send you a picture of
what my car looks like after they start applying calcium chloride this
winter.
