Larry, my biggest concern would be instability of the cockpit cavity in a c
ollapse. The center console certainly provides some bracing to help offset
the rather dismal performance of a "bathtub" when end loaded.

I have dual sticks in my 601XL/650 and because I'm 6'6" , I'm considering d
oing away with the center console.- The challenge is then placement of th
e fuel selector.- Any ideas?

Hi Larry
Is this possible? as the centre console will add stiffness to the cockpit
and provide some lateral bracing to the bottom of the instrument panel?
As I'm short ass of only 5'10" I will keep the centre console!!!
Looking at the parts list for the Dual Stick Option (page 6-XN-24) this
shows upright panels forward of the centre spar with two angles 6K2-4 which
are not shown on my drawing 6-K-2 rev 03/03 or noted in any of the
subsequent drawing revisions. Can anyone advise their size, length and
material thickness?
Many thanks in advance.

Greg,
I made a wrench that holds onto the nut, but you have to put a dab of
goop on the wrench to keep it from jiggling out during the process.
Some have added a strip pre-drilled and tapped for this job, but once or
twice having done this, it's not too bad.

I appreciate the concern, but would tell everyone that the idea of leaving
out the center console came from Roger at ZAC. He said if he was building a
650, he would leave it out to avoid the cramping effect of the center
console. Apparently lateral stability is not his concern.

I'd have to agree. I'm working on my panel and the wiring now. With the panel attached
with clecos to the two gussets on the side and the center support that
runs from the panels to the firewall of the panel and neither the top or the
sides connected to anything the bottom isn't moving much, if any at all.

The key is to keep the center spar webs from wanting to twist or bend. I tied
the tops of my center spar to additional forward extruded longerons on the floor
pan, and to additional z rails/longerons on the firewall (4 positions.)
This was long before the LAA was calling for center spar reinforcement.
Have Roger review the LAA call out and then get back to you and see if he changes
his mind. Roger is the one who sold me on PH hinge ailerons rather than flex
hinge. I wish I would have had better advice and stayed with CH's tested,
original design.

For those who might be interested:
We have made some updates to our website and added a few products to the "coming
soon" section.
Check them out at:
http://www.magnificentmachine.com
MagVair Forged Pistons:
We now have pistons in all sizes in stock and ready to ship.
This is the second run of pistons; we have tightened up the pin to piston tolerances
a little.
Due to an increase in manufacturing costs we are forced to increase the prices
slightly.
However we realize that some may have been waiting for these to return to stock
before placing their order.
As such, we will hold off the price increase for a week or so.
MagVair Forged 4340 Rods:
Our Rods have been on back order for some time now due to a container that was
"set aside for inspection".
The container has been released and I expect the rods here any day now.
Those of you who have patiently been awaiting these will not be disappointed.
MagVair Forged 4340 Crankshafts:
The crankshaft project continues to move forward.
We now have a 3" stroke crankshaft in a case with our rods, pistons and aluminum
cylinders.
This engine is very close to completion and I expect it to run within the next
couple of weeks or so.
We will then proceed with testing.
We recently put a 3.25" crankshaft into a case with a cam and two rods.
When we rotated the crankshaft we were looking for interference between the rods
& the cam lobes.
It was a quick and dirty test to see if it was going to be a big problem or a small
problem.
We did not see any interference with those two rods.
We have not mocked up all of the cylinders yet so we may find some interference
with the other rods.
At this time it looks like there should be no problems.
We will mock up the entire rotating assembly soon as time permits.
Paying customers come first; R&D doesn't pay the bills. :-)
Our next Engine project looks like it will have the 3.125" crankshaft and 92MM
cylinders.
This will net a 3165cc engine.
Thank you,
