Subject: | Re: 601XL project for sale with WW Corvair |
I really need to move this project, We have over $7k invested, but I'd let it go
for $6k. Anyone that has interest, I'd be willing to trade, barter, whatever,
I just need the room in the garage!
Again the engine is already sold so it's just the plane. I have plans #6847, and
all the parts minus wing skins and flap skins. rudder, elevator, horizontal
stab, ailerons, main spars built. This was a TD version with dual sticks...

I was told by a local paint supplier that I should spray vinegar on the
aluminum and then rinse it off with water prior to spraying self etching
primer on it. He said that is what they do on boats. Has anyone ever heard
this? Good / bad?
Thanks,

Sounds like a cheap acid etching to me. I have no idea if it would work but that
is what he is trying to do with the vinegar.

That has been done for years=2Calso when applying paint to glass. Old sign
maker taught me that =2Cbut i use alodine and metal prep. I think you are r
ight comparing that to acid prep.It cleans off coatings and grease=2C if so
mething isn't done it will peel more often.

When using spot putty on aluminum i don't use the red type from bondo =2Cec
t. they are iron oxide and i fear that they will cause corrosion . That is
why we use zinc or inert epoxy primers. I found a body shop supplier that
sells Sherin Williams auto paint they had a spot putty with titanium base.
I was made for aluminum. A little pricy but better working that the other s
tuff. Definitly wear masks when sanding any products. Dennis

vinegar is a neutralizing agent and we used to use it after we cleaned our
pizza ovens at our Papa Johns but I have no idea why they would use it before
the etching unless it is to counter any acid based chemical residue which you
shouldn't have on new aluminum.
