Subject: | wing flap predrilled hole rivet conflict |
I discovered a problem with the pre-drilled holes in part 6W1-2, which I
suspect is common to all copies of this part. I sent the following message to
Zenith today; when I get a response, I will post it:
"The predrilled holes in the flap skin, part 6W1-2, may have a conflict. The
rearmost top and bottom holes in the skin are too close to each other to
allow a rivet to be inserted from both sides.
I discovered this when I had already riveted an A5 rivet in the top hole, and
attempted to insert a rivet in the bottom hole opposite.
Since the holes are already present, please advise on the recommended method
of repair for the holes on the bottom skin, and your recommended work around
when I assemble the next flap."
If you have predrilled flap skins, if you have not already seen this problem,
I suspect you will.

Jim,
I experienced the same problem with the flap skins. Zenith said to elongate the
bottom holes
with a file just enough to allow the bottom rivet to clear the one on top. That
worked out ok for me.
Elongate the hole parallel to the rib.
You'll need to use a hand riveter. Insert the bottom rivet at an angle and slowly
squeeze the riveter as you
slowly bring the rivet head normal to the skin. As the rivet is pulled it starts
to get shorter and should
clear the top rivet. The trick is to have the rivet head normal to the skin before
the rivet expands to the hole diameter.
Go slow and be cautious.

Jim
Someone posted this same question a while back. The way I handled this was
to remove the stem from the rivet and then cut the rivet to make it shorter and
then re insert the stem and then it should clear. If you try and make it
work the way it is it usually looks like crap and then you will try and remove
it to try again and then it gets worse.
