I had to raise the fuselage to get clearance to install the gear.? I had the rear of the fuselage supported on a jack stand,? I set up the rig shown in the photos and lifted it VERY slowly ( I was working alone, so the pucker factor was really high ).? I would lift it enough to get another 2 x 4 under it and lift again. I kept this up until I had the needed clearance and the nose gear firmly supported on blocks. ? When the main gear was installed, I just reversed the procedure. Hope this helps. After over 1000 landings (over 150 very-rough field landings) it is time to replace my main gear support rubbers. (I wondered what that rattling noise was when taxiing over the grass/dirt-mud/ gravel - turned out to caused by a missing "rubber" between the gear and fuselage gear support fitting on the left hand side).? ? ? I have some ideas on how to jack up for replacement, but if anyone else has done it on a full-up 601XL, I would appreciate info on how you did it.? ? ? Thanks,? ? ? Tony Graziano? ? Buchanan, Tn? ? Hello, I am working on the support brackets for my 601 firewall which I made out of 26 gauge galvanized steel as listed in the drawings. I am treating the Aluminum surfaces with self etching primer. Any ideas, suggestions on whether and how to treat the galvanized steel parts? I left mine bare. It doesn't need any treatment, the zinc coating will protect it. Hello Bryan, I agree that the zinc coating will protect steel from the elements on it's own. My question/concern was if there was anything special that might be needed for the contact surfaces between aluminum and the galvanized steel to protect it over time. - Maarten ||* > protect it. > > On Apr 3, 2009, at 9:45 AM, mversteeg wrote:*| >> Hello, >> >> I am working on the support brackets for my 601 firewall which I made >> out of >> 26 gauge galvanized steel as listed in the drawings. As I recall, I put zinc chromate primer on the aluminum where it meets the firewall, although it really wasn't necessary. Zinc and aluminum play well together, you shouldn't need any treatment between the two. Zinc or cadmium are the two recommended platings for fasteners used with aluminum because there is minimal corrosion potential between them. Stainless steel is another matter, aluminum will act as a sacrificial anode to stainless, so a coating between the two is necessary if there is a chance exposure to moisture.
