Contactors are nothing more than solenoids like on the starter of your car.
The aircraft needs a continuous duty contactor if you want to have a master
switch for your electrical system. This should be located near the battery.
The starter contactor is placed in the battery area also so the starter
cable is not "hot" all the time. It should be a contactor built for
intermittent duty. Both are available from Aircraft Spruce.

Subject: Zenith601-List: CONTACTORS
List,
Have the 3300 with FWF kit from Jab.USA. Have been reading everything I can
find on "contactors" ( AeroElectric, various Matronics lists, etc.). Do not
understand most of it... so, my question is: Do I need to add one or more
"Contactor" to my installation?
I am not an EE, nor much of an electrician...just trying to understand what
the Contactor might buy me. Planning an all-glass panel, if that makes any
difference?
Please don't throw electrical theory at me...I'm just looking for a simple
explanation why I should or should not consider putting contactors on. If
so, which one?
Thanks,
Mike

Whether or not you need a master contactor depends on how much current
is being supplied to your system and where your battery is mounted. If
you only have around 30 amps to control and your battery is mounted
ahead of the firewall, you probably don't really need a master relay.
You just have to make sure that nothing is drawing any current when
your master switch or circuit breaker is off or you will will find the
battery dead after sitting for a few days.
If you have very much more than 30 amps or your battery is mounted
behind the seats with large cables running through the cabin, you
probably should use a master relay. The master relay will isolate the
battery from all circuits, including the starter circuit. The starter
circuit can draw hundreds of amps and has no over-current protection.
If the main battery cable to the starter shorts out for any reason,
the results can be very serious. This could easily happen in a crash
landing.

Subject: | Saddle Alternatives...? |
While fitting the fiberglass saddle between the horizontal stab and rudder of my
XL, I kept thinking "there's got to be a better way"...
I've looked through the archives for ideas, so I got that base covered. But I
was wondering if anyone recently had done anything original with their own version
of the saddle.
The one I have is fairly mis-shapen, and while I could certainly make it work by
using a heat gun to bend it, I can already see that the quality is going to
be lousy.
Has anyone totally "rolled their own" here...?
Thanks,
- Patrick

It should be continuous duty for your master contactor. You would use an
intermittent contactor for your starter.
