agent This is from the HS35 data sheet. 5. SURFACE PREPARATION =A2 Surfaces should be prepared using the proper undercoat system fol lowing recommended procedures. =A2 Sanding grits coarser than 220P grit should be finish sanded with finer grit prior to application. =A2 Clean surface with Aqua Clean 170. 6. SUBSTRATES =A2 Properly prepared previously painted surfaces =A2 Properly prepared OEM finishes =A2 VP50 Epoxy Primer =A2 DTM2004 Primer =A2 CPS Series Primers and Sealers It look like HS35 is not intended for application on bare metal. --- On Thu, 5/21/09, Thruster87 <alania@optusnet.com.au> wrote: From: Thruster87 <alania@optusnet.com.au> Subject: Zenith601-List: Re: Paint Peeled of after using Prekote as etching agent The Valspar HS35 two pack acrylic paint is the primer and if the topcoat=C2 - [two part as well]is applied after 1/2hr and before 2hrs it does not re quire sanding as the primer is still tacky [chemically]. This method is gre at for surfaces with protruding rivet heads. The only conclusion I have come up with, is the temp was only 20 deg C and there may have been moisture in the air line????? That is correct Valspar HS35 is NOT a etch primer that is why your need to use an etching agent like Alodine or an etch primer.I used Prokote which is a proprietary and revolutionary formula, PreKote Surface Pretreatment is a non-chromated metal preparation chemical utilizing a safe, hazard-free process. PreKote offers off-the-chart adhesion, improved paint flexibility, and superior corrosion protection on painted surfaces. PreKote has passed stringent testing by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Boeing Company and other coating industry leaders. By eliminating the need for chromate conversion coatings, acid etches, solvent washes and other toxic processes, PreKote can reduce paint preparation time and costs by up to 40% achieving results superior to hazardous processes and products. BUT IT DID NOT WORK so well on my wings ???? Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=245005#245005

agent I dont want this to grow into an argument, but for the benefit of others, V alspar documentation does not approve HS35, listed as a sealer and surfacer , for use on bare metal, even if cleaned and etched. It looks like it is pr imarily intended for sealing and filling scratches in old paint for refinis h jobs. Ive used Dupont surfacers in automotive work so I have some experie nce with that type of product. As far as I know, Boeing uses epoxy, not polyurethane primers, and, accordi ng to Valspar literature, epoxy is approved for use on bare metal. http://www.valsparrefinish.com/refinish/pdf/UNDERSTANDING_UNDERCOATS.pdf --- On Fri, 5/22/09, Thruster87 <alania@optusnet.com.au> wrote: From: Thruster87 <alania@optusnet.com.au> Subject: Zenith601-List: Re: Paint Peeled of after using Prekote as etching agent That is correct Valspar HS35 is NOT a etch primer that is why your need to use an etching agent like Alodine or- an etch primer.I used Prokote which is a proprietary and revolutionary formula, PreKote=C2=AE Surface Pretr eatment is a non-chromated metal preparation chemical utilizing a safe, haz ard-free process. Subject: Flutter Testing shows 601/650 OK
See Below: ((Heck! I only took mine up to 195 mph (314 kph) during my Phase I testing)) Tony Graziano 601XL/Jab3300; N493TG: 492 hrs ZENAIR EUROPE NEWS http://www.zenairulm.com/News/index_files/Page1128.htm Update of May 15, 2009 The results of the German-led GVT (Ground Vibration Tests) are in and they are unequivocal: The Zodiac CH 601 XL and CH 650 E are not subject to flutter if built, maintained and flown as intended by Zenair. The linear flutter tests confirmed this for all speeds up to 400 km/h and with aileron control cable tension down to less than ten pounds. Chris Heintz and representatives from Zenair Europe will be meeting with DAeC engineers in Germany during the coming week to review results of the recently concluded tests and to discuss the process for lifting remaining flight limitations on the LTF-UL certified aircraft. "I am pleased with the results of the GVT" said Zodiac designer Chris Heintz, "with the integrity of the design confirmed, we now need to ensure that pilots don't forget that all aircraft have limitations". Zenair is currently planning an education campaign aimed at informing and sensitizing pilots of its designs to the importance of understanding and respecting aircraft limitations (i.e. the Zodiac is not designed for high stress or aerobatic maneuvers). Nick Heintz of Zenair Europe says he expects that with the new GVT results in hand, temporary limitations placed on the Zodiac model by various CAA agencies around Europe will soon be reversed: "These were put in place after a negative report from the Dutch Safety Board last year suggested that the aircraft was prone to flutter - these new Ground Vibration Tests, carried out by a leading world-wide expert in the field of material fatigue and vibrations, now clearly proves otherwise". He stated that all interested CAA offices will soon have an opportunity to review results from the tests. Additional information will be posted here very shortly.

Looks like a trip to the paint suppliers to have a bit of a discussion on why they recommended the HS35 ???? DTM2004 is what they should have recommended.Just goes to show you can't even rely on the so called experts.
