Close Eric. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the prices and/or quantities on the web-site's part list are incorrect. However it does include hardware, rivets etc. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=247192#247192 ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 07:52:59 AM PST US Subject: Re: Zenith601-List: Re: Component Kits From: jaybannist@cs.com It now appears that you know what you are talking about. Advantages of Component Kits: Less money up front. Better use of the storage space in your work area. Less time for some parts to be sitting around unused and getting damaged. You benefit from stuff that gets "new and improved" along the way before you purchase that component (for example the new BRS brackets, some of the CNC drilled skins, and the new XL nose gear would not have been available for me had I bought the whole kit at once back in 2006). Long lead times for some parts from other vendors become less of a problem (important for guys going the Corvair route). Disadvantages of Component Kits:: Component kits are by no means complete. Contents of component kits will change, and pieces (like forward top skins) that were included in a particular sub-kit 3 years ago may be included in a different sub kit by the time you get to it. I've had to chase a lot of hardware, and there are a lot of times (as a first time builder) that I've not known that I needed something "until I needed it". Shipping and handling costs will rise. Redesigned parts that you receive later will not match your set of plans that was printed 3 years ago. If Zenith goes out of business you may be stuck with pieces for half an airplane. Spousal support that was there when you started on the $300 rudder kit may become a pain point when you need to drop a few more thousand dollars on the instruments, after dropping a few thousand on the engine, after dropping a few thousand on the fuselage, after dropping a few thousand on the wings........ Also if you go the component route you will end up fabricating more stuff yourself (I actually consider this as an advantage, but then there is a cost associated with tools and the value of your time). The right decision also depends on WHEN you make it. I honestly don't know if I'd make the same decisions if I were just starting today, although in hindsight it was a good decision for me as I look back after having started in 2006 (when the market viewed the XL in a different light than is the case in 2009). Going the component route worked great for me. - Pat -------- Patrick XL/650/Corvair N63PZ (reserved) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=247195#247195 ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 03:40:04 PM PST US From: "Damien" Subject: Zenith601-List: One bungee on each Main Gear Hello Group: I am in the process of buying a 601 HDS with a 80HP Rotax. The gentleman who built it decided a few years ago to leave just one bungee on each main gear in order to make grass landings less bumpy. He wrote a short article about it in the Zenair News. Does anyone have an opinion on this? If there is just one bungee on a gear leg, is there a concern of damage if that one bungee deteriorates ? Thanks ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 03:48:02 PM PST US Subject: Zenith601-List: Re: Component Kits From: "jonaburns" I went the component kit route... I think it is the right way for some, but it ended up costing me several thousand dollars more then I should have spent. I made my first purchase in October of 2006, and was done purchasing a few months later. If I would have waited perhaps a year or more to complete the purchase then the opportunity costs would have been more in line. The component kits were something like $1000.00 more expensive than the complete kit, plus shipping is more. I also ended up reordering a few parts to get the newer versions, so that added to the costs. My total costs with Zenith are right at $19000.00 counting component kits, shipping, extra stuff, etc... Looking back, if building wasn't so much fun, it would have been more financially prudent to go with the QB kit and saved all the hours. That would have also got me the LR fuel tanks and in the air much faster. In the end, go with your budget and work on the plane as often as you can. You will see progress and learn a lot any way you go. I am almost done and moving to the airport for final assembly next month. If you break one, you don't necessarily break up the plane before you replace the broken bungee. Landings with two are none too hard with some practice, but I'd imagine a fully loaded HDS rumbling along on uneven or rough runways would probably break something before breaking the last bungee. I'd recommend the redundancy as gear attachments on the center wing are relatively delicate without the shock absorption two bungees provide. I'd not want to strip out the threaded top plates, ding the vertical guides or impact the gear box structure below the wing as repairs could be quite daunting. A double bungee is capable of being bottomed, so a single could more easily be as well. One bungee to me is a scary concept!
