Jerry, I placed the turnbuckle for the upper elevator horn adjacent to the horn.? I made the fiberglass fairing saddle removable.? That makes it accessible.? The other trunbuckle. in the arm rest, is on top so it is accessible, too. Jay Bannister -----Original Message----- From: Jeyoung65@aol.com Sent: Sun, Jul 19, 2009 9:08 pm Subject: Re: Zenith601-List: Elevator Control Cables 601XL ? Just a thought. I just closed my arm rest and thought, how will I make cable adjustment. When I do need to adjust the cables I will move?the turnbuckles so I can get to them using the door that I have added (like the 601xl, I think) just aft of the?rear spar on the bottom. This will require adding a short section of cable to the bracket and reducing the cables length.? Peter, The only asymmetry I know about is if you move your aileron to the extreme. You would have to move your aileron and the check one cable, center the aileron and them check the other cable for this to effect your reading. Are you about a foot or more away from your turnbuckles and guides? Jerry of GA In a message dated 7/19/2009 10:50:03 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, vk3eka@bigpond.net.au writes: Jerry, I have moved the turnbuckles so they are accessible from the rear access door. They are much easier to adjust. I tried holding the elevator in the up position and the elevator cable is still tight. Is there some asymmetry in the cable geometry? Cheers Peter . **************What's for dinner tonight? Peter, Lock your elevator in neutral position with a board, then adjust your cable tension, making sure the control stick is where you want it moving it with the turnbuckles. Release the elevator and cycle the controls stop to stop about three times and then recheck the tension. Good inputs, Karl and Rick. I would not be too concerned if you hit turbulent conditions, just slow down and ride it out without jerky elevator inputs. In my over 500 hrs in my XL, I have been in conditions where I had to hold my headset on with my free hand to keep it on my head and prevent it from bouncing around the cockpit. One time on a cross country I was pretty close to gross weight - my poor wife, who is also a pilot, filled a "barf bag". Also note that Mr. Phillips, who reported his extreme conditions and shaking wings over a power plant, reported entering the conditions at above 140 and when diving to clear the area hit about 170. Also, if I recall correctly, the only reported aileron flutter was two cases where the cables were SLACK, the airspeed was reduced to stop the flutter, and after tightening the cables the condition could not be repeated. Thanks Guys, I lengthened the top cable (at the stick) by around an inch and all now seems well. I'll tension at neutral with the elevator clamped in position.
