Folks,
Did you just rivet the plate on, or did you "upgrade" to nut plates? I
worry about ever having to drill those rivets out incase something
happens to the servo or if I want to CorrsionX in the inside of my tail.

Hey Lee,
I have been thinking about the same thing. So I have decided to go with nut
plates and machine screws. Not that I am opposed to rivets, but wanted to
make it easier to access in case of an issue.

I'm using nutplates - just in case.

I riveted the plate in question, and many other places as well. I
still used nutplates and screws in places which certainly need access
for inspection such as the aileron bellcrank.
Drilling out rivets is very easy if you do it properly. I start with
a number 40 drill (the same one I start drilling rivet holes with)
and drill the center of the rivet down just a little way. Then I use
a number 30 followed by a number 20 if needed until the head of the
rivet pops off. Some times this also removes the rest of the rivet
and some times it takes a little work with a punch to remove the
remaining parts.
After doing this at least 200 times on my airplane I feel it is a
straight forward and easy process to complete with no damage to the
parts being held by the rivet.

I have 2 doccuments I received from a friend of mine who is an aircraft
builder in Australia concerning the 601 XL that lost a canopy down there.
One is "External Assistance to Recreational Aviation Australia - Collision
with water 22 KM NNW Gold Coast Airport". This is dated June 2009. The other
is "Recreational Aircraft Airworthiness Notice 070109-1" concerning a
secondary canopy latch. Their version of a secondary latch is detailed with
color pictures. It's way too much to print here. If anyone wants these 2
doccuments from down under please send an E-mail to backstagelive@gmail.com
and I will send you a copy.
On a lighter note, EAA was fantastic this year! The boys in the Zenith booth
were great as usual answering questions. As always, I look all over the
field for an airplane kit that I would really want to build. Once again, I
couldn't find anything I liked better than my 601 XL! One of my friends that
stay with me from Seattle just about lived at the Zenith booth for the
entire week. He wants a 750! The builders dinner was great again as usual,
but guys, you need to get a bigger place!
One thing I saw that I really liked were the rivets on the wing of a
EuroStar. It's one of those clones of a 601 XL and the wings look identical.
They use the #5 rivets on the wing identical to what we use, but they fill
each rivet with something that makes it look like a solid rivet. It's done
strictly for looks and I like the way it looks! I don't know what they use,
and the people in their booth didn't seem to know much about the airplane.
It's built somewhere in Russia and they get the wings wings with the rivets
filled. They did know that the squrt something in there with a syringe, but
I don't know what they use. Bondo is too heavy. Does anyone know what they
use?
Does anyone have any pictures of how you put your wheel pants on a 601 XL? I
have an idea, but I would like to see how other people did the job? Could
you lead me to your website or E-mail me some pictures? Thanks.

The Aussie Canopy report is on only a piece of the accident report. It is not the
accident report in total. The investigator was given a small piece of the canopy
to look at, thats all. The full report is still to be released.
As far as the canopy lock, after a number of loose canopies came open (normally
the PAX side ) and the reported canopy open in flight stories we saw on the net,
we came up with this secondary lock system. I just picked a few Ideas and
gave pictures to the RAA as examples of what can be done. Since the secondary
locks have been fitted no more open canopies.
