All,
Depending on how it is registered, can a buyer/flyer do maintenance on it by attending/passing
the ELSA repairman classes?
It looks like it is registered as amateur, can it be re-registered as ELSA so that
the owner/buyer can work on it?
Just wondering.

Not my plane, I just noticed the ad on Barnstormers.
www.barnstormers.com/listing.php?id=360251
ZENITH CH 601 XL . $6,900 . FOR SALE . This Zenith CH 601 XL (N119KB) is a
low wing, 2-place aircraft built in 2003. It was built 100% according to
plans. No damage history. It was donated to our organization (see
accompanying contact info). The airframe has less than 200 hr TT. There is
no engine or prop, but it had a Jabiru 330 which the donor sold. However,
according to the donor, instruments worth $3,000 to $4,000 are installed.
This project was donated to us because the owner needed a faster plane.
Currently it is disassembled for transport and must be picked up in Wichita,
KA. The project includes plans and all paperwork. . VISIT OUR SITE

If it is licensed as an experimental, it is very unlikely it can be
re-registered as an ELSA. I believe there was a period in which so-called
"fat" ultralights could be re-registered (or really, registered) as an LSA,
but that time has passed.
If it is an experimental, then either a repairman's certificate for that
aircraft or an A&P ticket will be required. The builder of the aircraft could
have requested a repairman's certificate, but I don't believe that option is
open to a future buyer.
Short answer: I don't think so.

Hi Keith,
I think it is the airworthiness certificate that matters rather than
the registration.
If it is E-AB or E-LSA then anyone can work on it. For E-AB the
builder who has the repairman certificate for this plane can sign off
an annual inspection. For E-LSA anyone can attend a 16(?) hour class
and be able to sign off the annual for a plane he owns. In all cases
an A&P can sign off the annual.
Have fun,
Paul

It appears to have been registered as an E-AB, if that is so, it can't be re-registered
as an E-LSA because the "fat ultralight" deadline has passed and that
was the only way a Zodiac could be registered as an E-LSA. As an E-AB, anyone
can do any of the maintenance on the airplane, no certification of any kind is
needed. However, an amateur builder repairman certificate for that particular
airplane or an A&P licence is required for signing off the annual condition
inspection. The only person who can get the repairman certificate is the original
builder. So, if you buy it, you can maintain it but you will almost certainly
need to have an A&P sign off the annual.

I looked it up.It was EXP-AB. And the deadline for E-LSA has long passed.
Any future owner can do all the work on it as they can any EXP-AB but an A&P is
required for the annual.

A builder who's already well along on their own plane could snap this up "for parts".
Think of it as a "quick build" fuselage, with a spare set of wings...
I forget exactly what I paid for my fuselage kit, but it must have been a solid
$5000 when you add in crating and shipping plus all the other nickel & dime stuff
you need but don't get. Add another $2000 for the canopy. Then there's
the instruments, the seats, the labor...
Some builder is going to get a real jump-start here. Where were the deals like
this a year or two ago when I could have used them... :-(
