Subject: | 601XL gear removal for seat modifications |
I have been trying to see how the modifications in the updated plans and posted
photo instructions can be done without removing the gear.
Has anyone actually put in the new brackets (6-ZU-3-4) under and on both sides
of the seats (6B15-4 and 6B18-1).
It would seem that the seat bottoms (6B15-1) and the consul sides (6B18-1) have
rivets that can only be removed and replaced by removing the landing gear. The
photo guide does not seem to suggest at all that the landing gear be removed.
Putting in these new brackets without removing the pieces they attach to does not
appear to be something that will lead to a professional result.
If anyone has finished this part, observations would be helpful. Zenith has not
been very clear on their responses to my requests for information on this.

You can do it without removing the gear you just leave the bottom row
attached and place the angles in from the bottom. But don't do it until you have
replaced the center section because you can't bend the panels and it makes
it nearly impossible to get the uprights back in.
If anyone has any questions they can give me a call or email me

Although I wasn't far enough along to have the gear installed, I reached the
same conclusion as you. I installed the rivets which are under the gear from
the bottom. The only clean way I could see to remove them would be to remove
the gear. Cutting off the rivets from the top is, in my case, likely to damage
the rivet holes and skin.
Even if they could be removed from the top, it would leave rivet fragments
flopping around under the gear. Then, when it comes time to install the new
rivets above the gear, it becomes problematic.
One of the advantages of an experimental aircraft is that you can vary the
approach to match your own convictions. However, this strikes me as belonging
in the category of something where it's tempting to take a shortcut to save
time, but the shortcut winds up taking more time later, and reduces the
overall quality of the work.

A few are still been build, refurbished and kept flying.
The older generation is quite sturdy, like you say bullet proof.
There is a good Yahoo community for the older CH200, CH250 and CH300.

Thanks for the feedback Pete!
I was over in Blighty in September visiting family and hooked up with a
homebuilder e-pal there (finally him in person) and he gave me a pile of the
"Light Aviation" magazines. I must say I was impressed with how well
organized the self-regulated LAA is, and the magazine's articles were very
well written too. The mags put my luggage nearly 10 kg over weight, so they
went into my carry-on backpack. It was an effort to stand nonchalantly
upright at the check-in counter at Heathrow!
I may have to re-think my engine choice if I decide to go the CH-601 route,
but if I did go up to an engine larger than my A-75/80's then a bullet-proof
CH-200 may work for me as well (if I could find plans for it). Chris
Heintz's machines are the closest I can find to a "tin Jodel" and I admire
the "KISS" philosophy of his designs.
Sincerely,

<peter.morris@optimusaberdeen.com>
Until last year I owned a 601HD with an O-200 in it. It was either the
first or second HD built in the UK and originally it had a 2 litre VW
engine. It flew poorly with that engine - which was making 65 to 70hp. The
rate of climb was around 300 fpm at sea level and the 'cruise' 90 mph
On that basis I would suggest an HDS is a very poor choice - there is one
locally with a Rotax 912 and even it is not a great performer.
My HD with the O-200 was not a particularly good performer either - the
O-200 makes most of its power at high rpm - which you cannot really access
without a controllable pitch propeller. The 80hp Rotax 601HDs that I have
flow were much better performers than mine with the notional 100hp from the
O-200. They were of course much lighter the O-200 version is at least 65lb
heavier.
I would suggest that an A series engine is just not powerful enough to give
you the 100mph cruise that you are looking for. Whilst the cost of a Rotax
is pretty horrid, there is a good reason for it - it's an excellent engine!
In Europe at the moment there is a reasonable supply of time expired 912
engine as Rotax do not rebuild them and the lregulations say TBO or 12 years
- although the recent TBO increase has had an immediate effect. A friend
of mine has bought 2 - which have both gone into homebuilt 601s. After 1500
hrs there were in very good condition - no wonder the TBO was increased!

Subject: | Re: 601XL gear removal for seat modifications |
Jeff,
I can sort of see how the angle brackets can be added to the seat bottoms with
one end still attached although I don't think doing so will ever produce a really
nice result. Removing the center consul does seem impossible however. The
bottom is riveted right over the center of the gear. I suppose one could grind
out the rivets from the wrong end and leave the rivet heads stuck in the landing
gear channel. Again not an ideal solution.
Taking the gear off is not that hard. I am mainly trying to see if I am doing the
whole thing wrong and that is leading to the need to remove the gear.
[quote="Afterfxllc(at)aol.com"]You can do it without removing the gear you just

Subject: | Subaru -EA-81 on avgas? |
Hi all,
I've recently finished testing my 601-HDS and am looking forward to doing
some touring. I know that I can get avgas at small airfields all over
Australia whereas getting premium unleaded would mean taking fuel bladders
and buying from the nearest petrol station.
Can anyone there with experience on running a Subaru EA-81 on avgas let me
know what's involved, pitfalls etc? I know rotaxs seem to run on either.
Thanks,
Greg.

HI Greg,
You can run the EA-81 on Avgas 100 LL or 87 octane with 10% ethanol
without any difficulty. The lead
in Avgas would suggest you change the oil every 30 hours to keep the
lead in 100 LL from damaging valves.
