Thanks for the replies on the condition report (annual) log book entry. I
wholeheartedly agree that the fewer words used, the better the entry.
Now if I can only get my wife to do the same.

Sabrina,
Should you want to pursue the (cold!) open cockpit, we have an extra canop
y and assembly parts we will sell.
A very small percentage of XL have crashed. A very small percentage of XL
owners make statements, or take actions, that suggest unwise maintenance/
operating practices. I do not think there is anything wrong with the XL
as is -- if it is flown in the manner for which it was designed. We, of
course, are doing the upgrade because someday we will want to sell what
we have. This is not mid-winter fun.

This question has been debated, discussed, argued, sworn at, churned, regurgitated,
revisited, and now, re-asked. Let's just do the damned "upgrade" and be done
with it! OK? LOL

The CH601XL is basically a sound design. Unfortunately, on rare occasion in
unknown conditions the wings fall off. We don't even know the conditions
since nobody who has experienced this stayed around to report the
circumstances.
Just because only 1 percent or so of the fleet has failed doesn't mean there
is not a problem. It just means it is not a problem that happens
frequently. If only we knew which 1 percent of the fleet would be the next
to fail this would be a really easy problem to deal with.

I expected to find extensive test flight results from AMD and Zenith when I returned
from vacation last week.
It is more a fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me thought process
as to CH's upgrade package.
My upgrade will cost as much as Zenith's in materials and weigh in at just about
the same if one used AN bolts instead of AL driven rivets on the main spars.
My savings are in time and peace of mind knowing that I did no harm to the original
spars and center section.
I figure I will shave 200 hours off the upgrade.
No removal or dis-assembly of any flying or control surfaces. Only 20 rivets drilled
out and 6 cuts into the skins. Four small slits where 4130 passes through
the skins and two round access holes in the lower leading edge just outboard
of nose rib #5 and forward of the front lower spar doubler.
I still have time to decide on whether to use round or streamlined tubing for the
two top mounted struts. Streamlined gets pretty heavy in order to get the
same compression strength provided by round tubing.
The real problem that still has to be worked out is the elevator/stick sensitivity
when fully loaded to aft CG (or beyond as the NTSB may well determine.) Until
then, my aircraft is a "no passengers" craft.
I fear more harm than good will come from placing large weights at the outboard
ends of our particular rear spars, esp. where proper cable tension is maintained.
Piper's decision is amazingly good news for those of us who are unhappy with the
CH re-design.
This is what EXPERIMENTAL is all about.

I am hoping we find the smoking gun when someone removes their wings and
says to themselves "That sure looks strange" but until more kits get
delivered and installed we just have to wait. Then again there might not be a
smoking gun so who the hell knows?
