Subject: | Fuel Tank Sender Sealing |
Before I installed the fuel tanks into my wings I tested them for leaks.
I have since read that some builders have put sealant over the sender before enclosing
in the wing.
Now that i have to pull them out to do the mods I would like some feed back on
how many just put them in and how many sealed there's.
And if they did seal them what did they use.
Thank you :D

I used Permatex non-hardening sealant #2 on the gasket and under the screw heads.
Pulling the tanks for the upgrades after 18 months of flying, one sender was
bone dry and the other had some slight blue (100LL) staining on it. It never
leaked enough to drop fuel on the floor and there is only a small trace of
blue on the skin below the tank. I think it came from a screw head and am hoping
that a little more sealant under the screws again will do the trick. I do
not want to pull the entire sender for a tiny bit of seepage. I would probably
do more damage than good.

Ian,
I installed my senders with the gasket and the paper washers on the screws
that came with the kit, no sealant. Neither one of them leaked. I did
not use any sealant on the fittings, either. One side leaked and the oth
er one didn't. Just to be sure, I would recommend using a very small amou
nt of anti-seize sealant on those male fitting threads.

I pressure checked the tanks after I put the supplied seals in place, and used
a water and dish soap mix to look for air leaks. I found a few, and sealed the
leaks with Dow Corning RTV 736 heat resistant sealant.
After the sealant had cured, I did another pressure check, and found no leaks.
If there are no leaks when one does a pressure check, I'm not really sure
where one would apply the sealant, and feel confident it was doing any good,
short of smearing it on every place that might leak.
