Afternoon List, for a while now I have heard that the control harmony of the 601/650
is a bit off with slower roll rates and more sensitive pitch. I was reading
an article regarding vortex generators in Kitplanes a few months ago and
noted that some designers had for example found that their rudder size was not
sufficient to provide the require forces. To rectify this without a redesign
some designers had been able to add VGs on, for example, the vertical stabliser
a couple of inches before the moving rudder control surface.
Has anyone tried putting VGs before the ailerons to increase their effectiveness
and therefore more closely harmonise the controls?
James

Hi James,
I don't deserve recognition as an expert on this subject. Still, I don't
think vortex generators would have much impact, if any, on the stiff
ailerons. I believe this comes from simple mechanics - the huge size of the
ailerons combined with the leverage built into the stick, bellcrank, and
aileron control point. This doesn't seem to impact the ability of the pilot
to get roll response from force input to the stick. It just limits the
motion of the stick in response to that force.
I have noticed that balancing the ailerons makes them easier to move. I
don't know how this change plays out for the entire system since I have only
done one aileron so far.
If you want to create "Control Harmony" that elusive trait so praised by
aviation magazine article authors and nearly nobody else I suggest you
reengineer the leverage in the aileron system.

Paul,
Just an FYI, I have flex hinges and am now back flying with the aileron counter
weights. There is no change in their movement. Stiff before the upgrades and
still the same stiffness afterwards. Personally I am OK with that. It is the
sensitive pitch axis that I still do not enjoy very much.

Chuck,
The nylon block probably doesn't need a vee groove for the nose
strut steering arms. When the gear is hanging, the steering arms weigh
in on these grooves
and cause the nose gear to become stiff. I made my nylon blocks
flat after having that experience and now they are very smooth and light.

Mike,
Apology accepted. There will be some really cool Corvair Stuff at the May Meeting.
It might just change your mind.
If the fuel is returning under pressure it might not make much difference where
you send it back in, but you will need another hole in the tank for the return.
Let me know if you need any welding done.

Subject: | Great source for Upgrade help |
While I seldom post to this site, I never the less frequent it several times a
week and feel that I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the many benefits
I have received from doing so. The most recent of these was in contacting member
Jeff Garrett - afterfxllc@aol.com for completing the upgrade kit installation
at a very good cost. Like many of you, I too, was a bit frustrated to learn
of these required changes as I was nearing completion. Jeff was kind enough
to provide pictures of his work before hand and several suggestions to get
it done. He was was very flexible and incorporated some nice features such as
laying my side skins on a new piece of aluminum to match the holes and leaving
out the old front spar angle holes so there were no old holes to cover over
with the T shaped piece. He then put the T inside instead of out, leaving the
outsides as they originally looked. I had him do some other parts while he
was into the fuselage and these were also done with good attention to detail.
Many were even primed and painted to match the steel parts I had powder coated.
Jeff also provided picture updates and phone calls as he progressed. Upon
completion, he trailered it back to Kansas City and picked up a friend's 601XL
to take back to Kentucky for the same upgrade. Had I been retired, I may have
elected to do the upgrade myself but for the cost of my time this was a good
avenue for me. Thanks again to all of you who have been posting ideas and answers
on this site for these past two and a half years I have been a member.
I hope to be finished by the end of the year and meet some of you whose names
I have become familiar with on this site. Still "W8N2BUP" John Richardson
