I'm about to order the upgrade kit and I'm thinking about the push-pull tubes for
aileron controls. Does anytime anybody from Zenith or so commented in any way
this modification?

Hi Paul, it is not the stiffness but rather that increased airflow directed directly
onto the aileron from the VG increases aileron effectiveness. Therefore
the angle of deflection per angle of stick movement remains the same but airflow
at a different angle is deflected onto the aileron making it more effective.
I can't remember the Kitplanes issue but if you read Barnaby Wainfan's recent articles
you will see it in there.
Has anyone tried this?

COURTLAND The president of the Tillsonburg Flying Club is dead after his single-engine
plane crashed between two houses in this village west of Delhi.
John Hart, 56, of Simcoe, who was alone in the plane at the time. The father of
eight, who taught drafting at Cayuga Secondary School was pronounced dead at
the scene following the 7:45 p.m. crash Thursday.
The single-seat plane went down between two houses on the east side of the village
on Highway 3 and about a mile short of the clubs grass airstrip and hangars
on Byerlay Road north of the crash scene.
The aircraft came down on the lawn between two houses on the north Side of Main
Street (Highway 3) just east of the entrance to the Courtland Lions Community
Park. The plane missed the garage of one of the homes and several vehicles by
about two meters, landing in a crumpled wreck upside down.
Norfolk OPP identified the pilot as John Hart of Norfolk County .
Courtland is about halfway between Delhi and Tillsonburg.
This is the second plane crash near Courtland in less than a year. Alvin Foster,
a local man in his 80s, died after his Cessna 150 crashed into a cornfield on
Byerlay Road, south of the village on Aug. 12, 2009.
Foster had survived a plane crash twice previously near Courtland, once when his
plane flipped while landing in a plowed field in 2002 and again when he hit
some trees after his engine failed during takeoff from his private strip in April
2007.
The OPP say they are not connecting the two crashes at this time as they appear
separate.
Ontario Provincial Police said the pilot in the latest incident was pronounced
dead at the scene.
Officials from Transportation Safety Board were expected to be at the scene this
morning.
Norfolk OPP Constable Kari Lee said police were called to the crash.
"We got a report of it and we responded to it," she said last night.
Members from the OPP's Technical Collision Investigation Unit and Forensic Identification
Unit also responded to the crash.
Lee said the identity of the pilot was being withheld pending notification of next
of kin. The pilot was the only occupant in the plane.
"It didn't hit the home or do anything to the homes, but it is on the residents'
property there," Lee said.
The crash site had been secured overnight by police.
Investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have observed or heard anything
leading up to and including the crash. Police can be contacted at 1-888-310-1122
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
In last year's crash, police responded after Foster was overdue from returning
home. Residents did not report a fire or plume of smoke following the crash.

I assume this was a 601XL, although it's hard to tell from the photo. If so,
does anyone know if it had the modifications performed?

Hi Dave,
I wasn't sure what sort of plane or accident this article was about so I did a
little research on the net. I found a bunch of better photos on the Delhi News-Record
site. Here are the results of my amateur photo interpretation:
The plane was clearly a Zodiac, but I don't think it was a Zodiac XL. The main
landing gear has metal slabs on both sides of each wheel. The Zodiac XL I built
has a gear spring that holds both wheels with metal on one side of each main
gear wheel.
The wings are attached to the fuselage as is the empenage. Therefore, there was
not an in-flight structure failure and breakup.
This is a sad event. Another member of the Zodiac community has had a bad outcome
from flying his plane. On the brighter side (for the rest of us) this was
not another example of a Zodiac XL breaking up in flight.
