Guys,
Way back a guy named John Read sent me a drawing and part numbers for sinte
red Bronze bushings for the rudder. I bought them cheaper than you could ev
er buy the material to make them. Here is the address / phone. I called and
found a local distributor. The drawing (.pdf ) is 1.3 megs so if you want,
e-mail me off list and i will send you a copy. I have not installed them a
s yet but plan to at 200 hrs. or when play is detected.
The bearings should be available from bearing distributors nationwide. The
lower pivot bearing part number is SF-812-4 the upper bearing part number i
s SF-812-5
Though the bearings come pre-lubricated I suggest that a small quantity of
molybdenum disulfide (MOS2) grease be applied to each bearing surface and t
o the face of each bearing flange. MOS2 grease has extremely high film stre
ngth so any wear should be very slight.

Hi Bobby;
The advantage of the bearing scheme I designed is that
aside from making the larger hole in the two bearing plates the original
4130
bushings and hardware are used. Even with minimal lubricant they should
not
have worn. I would appreciate a copy of the drawings too,

Larry, I think I did it differently than you.. in my case, the upper plate rotates
around the bushing that itself is captured in a fixed position between the
two angles attached to the rudder. The bolt does not rotate on any part.
Are you saying that the bushing should stay "with" the upper plate attached to
the fuselage and that the friction should be between the bolt and the bushing?
If so, that must be hard to lubricate...?

I keep a spray can of white lithium grease in the hangar. It's got a little straw
that sticks in the nozzle for pinpoint application. I can't recall the brand
name, but it should be available at auto parts stores. I put a little dab on
the hinges every so often. I use it on the piano hinges also, it goes on thin
enough to wick into the hinges and leaves behind a film of grease after the solvent
evaporates. I wipe off the excess before the solvent evaporates. I haven't
noticed any significant wear yet after about 320 hours of flight time.

Subject: | Re: Rudder hinge wear - solution anyone? |
Michel,
The bushing was made as a press fit in the large plate. The bolt secures
center within the bushing and was easy to lubricate by greasing the bolt
on assembly.
The upper and lower plates held to center by the bolt are strong enough
to not allow the bolt to rotate in them. The actual rotation forces are
borne by
the largest surfaces of the bolt and inside the bushing. The top and
bottom bushing surfaces are not strained at all in flight. Wear on my
bolt occurred because
it was not tight and locked to allow no pivot within the upper and lower
plates. The bolt now rotates with the rudder and the bushing is fixed by
its fit
in the plate. I had to make 4 bushings to get it right. The bottom plate
holds the rudder at elevation as well so that the top bushing isn't
doing all the lifting.
If the bushing were allowed to rotate in the top and bottom plates, I
believe wear would be a significant issue at the top pivot assembly.
Doubt bronze would be as good in holding a press fit and that's why I
made mine of steel.
