List,
After 9 months of upgrading and changing, my 601 Xl and I took to the air again
yesterday. While I was upgrading I reversed the landing gear and changed the
aileron cables to pushrods. The wing is much more ridged than before and the pushrods
seem to be more positive than the cables. When I landed for the first
time I raised a lot of eyebrows on the roll out. Especially since most of the
others at the field knew it was a test flight. After a graceful touchdown I pulled
back on the stick to see if I could hold the nose off and became airborne
again. After touching down the second time I let the speed bleed off a little
and pulled back again the nose came up but I did not get airborne. I did this
several times so you can imagine what the onlookers were thinking. I was on a
grass strip so it was even more weird. After I explained what I was doing they
all said it looked like one of my normal landings : ).
The wheels moved forward 6" and changed the C.G. by 1.5" to forward. Before reversing
the gear I could not hold the nose off even on concrete. I think I am going
to like the gear this way.
The airplane gained 26 lbs. on the same scales for a 797 new empty weight. Add
6 lbs. for the wheel pants for 803 total.
Anyway I am glad the upgrade is finished and hope to have many happy flights and
go for the $150 hamburger ( inflation ) this fall.
I want to thank all who contributed to this Blog especially the positive info about
solving building problems.
