I'm finally ready to do this, but do not understand the logic in placing th e arm at the aileron's extreme tip. Is there a downside to moving it inboar d, say, 100mn? Clarity on this would be much appreciated. - Elden Jacobson xl/3300 (do not archive)=0A=0A=0A

Hi Elden, Well, one consideration is the large hole you need to make in the rear channel to allow the balance arm into the wing cavity. I suppose the weakening of this primary structural element is less significant near the wing tip. Also, in the case of the aileron which contains the trim motor and tab there isn't room for the new ribs in the middle of the aileron. One other little point: This is the design that was reviewed by the FAA engineers for thousands of man-hours. If you make a significant change you need to duplicate that effort to determine your new design is at least as good as the one that was approved. It seems a lot easier to just follow the design released to us. Elden You need to move it 100 mm inboard if you angle the new ribs (per plans) however Zenith placed there new ribs at 90 degrees from the trailing edge and if you do that it will work also. Either way isn't (per plans) so the choice is yours. I move all my arms inboard 100 mm and haven't had any problems. One other note is if you have hinged ailerons you will have about 5 or 6 extra weights and your bolts will be too long. I haven't heard anyone else address this issue but I now have enough extra weights for another upgrade. Jeff In a message dated 9/5/2010 1:34:36 P.M. Thanks for all of your responses. I had thougt about making inspection holes as Paul did, but I have already gone forward with the anchor nuts. I am going to use anchor nuts along the sides also, as Jeff did. I was hesitant to drill the extra holes in the longeron. Thanks, Regards, Damien DO NOT ARCHIVE ----- Original Message ----- From: Damien To: zenith601-list@matronics.com Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 9:11 PM Subject: Zenith601-List: Nuts on outside Group: While I was waiting for a new prop this summer, I decided not to waste the downtime, so I drilled the rivets out of the cover over my instrument panel and gas tank on my 601 HDS and I replaced the rivets with nutplates, and with just bolts and nuts along the longerons. Unfortunately, it was a son-of-a-gun to put nuts and bolts along the longerons. It would be much easier if I were to thread the bolts from the inside and place the nuts along the outside of the longeron, on just the passenger side of the plane. My plan is to use thin nuts and the shortest 8-32 screws that I can. My AP/IA friend said that we can't do that, because it is not aviation. I want to do it anyway because it would make it so much easier to access the instrument panel and I don't think that it would affect streamlining significantly. What say you, members of the jury ? You could cut a strip of 4130 steel .090 minimum to fit the inside of the longeron the length of the holes you want to put screws in plus 20mm or so. Then backdrill from the outside and tap the holes for 8-32 screws. The strip would only strengthen the longeron when the screws were in place. You could glue the strip to stay put when the screws were out but I think two flush rivets placed between the existing holes would be ok.
