Subject: | Re: Carbon Monoxide |
Bobby,
Those are interesting observations of soot on your firewall. I guess I have not
seen that in my airplane, but here are a few observations I had on CO and an
effort to reduce it in my Jabiru installation. I have access to a calibrated
3M model 740 multi-gas detector and placed it in the passenger seat beside me.
My stock Jabiru FWF kit exhaust pipe extends past the lower cowl lip by only a
couple of inches. Flying in this configuration showed cockpit CO levels up to
170 ppm in full power climb and 50 ppm in cruise. As a comparison, OSHA allows
up to 35 ppm exposure in a time weighted average for an employee on an 8 hour
shift and says no employees should be exposed to more than 200 ppm ever. Needless
to say, this was a little alarming to me.
I went to AutoZone and bought an exhaust extension pipe for around $9 bucks. The
two screws that hold this on seem pretty cheap, but this has held rock-solid
for over a year and 50+ flight hours so far. I flew with this extension installed
and got CO levels of 32 ppm in full power climb and 0-5 ppm in cruise. When
I opened up the cabin heat, the level went up to 9 ppm and then came back down
when I closed it. 9 ppm of CO can be measured on a busy street corner in
just about any city. With these levels of measured CO, I have not done anything
further.
I am not sure what version of Jabiru exhaust you have, but if it does not extend
much past the lower part of the cowl and fuselage, I whole heartedly recommend
an extension.
Good Luck,
--------

How do you go about selling a home built project? For health consideration
s there is no longer any reason for me to continue construction of an aircr
aft that I will never fly. Several local builders have suggested that I par
t it out but it took me five years to get to where I am now and I don't hav
e the heart to take it apart. I briefly offered it for sale on Barnstormers
last year but when my prognosis improved I took it off Barnstormers and we
nt back to work on it. Now it seems I must try to move it again. I had almo
st no reaction to my ad on Barnstormers and am really not impressed with wi
th that format. Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks

Carroll,
We've had several successes at selling home built projects due to owner's
health or death. We would take pictures of the completed items which showed
The product at the stage each assembly was in. Never had more than half a
dozen pictures, but carefully taken and selected. These would be put on a
web site
and links would be posted in comments within relevant Matronic's pages and
other websites with phone number, location, price objectives and alternative
sale options.
There was seldom a price of that exceeded 65% of optimum retail value on any
items or project. They all sold within a few short weeks. ("we", as in
local EAA chapter)
Do enlist the help of your local EAA chapter members if you can.
Hope this helps,

Hi Carroll:
A lot of airplanes and partial completed projects sell on ebay on a regular
basis.
Set your starting price to what you would take as the lowest price and make
it clear that they are bidding on a project and not a finished airplane.
Explain that it will need to be disassembled by the buyer and transported
from your location. Put a lot of pictures on ebay, or a link to pictures on
one of the picture sites. Believe, it is pictures and a good description
that will sell your project.
