(Joe) Congratulations Paul! Keep us posted as you go through the flight test process. A long time back, there was a thread about turning the Zodiac landing gear around so it takes more of the weight off the nose during landing and takeoff. I'm not sure if anyone has done that. Is there anyone watching this thread that has actually done that? Would that be something you would consider Paul? (Joe) Hi Joe, I actually installed my gear with the flat edge forward on the first pass. I think I understand the reason the nose is so hard to get off the runway. It is because the main gear is put far enough behind the CG so you can step on the step behind the wing and still not make the tail smack in to the ground. (Joe) That's what I plan to do as well and I'm going to go with the grove gear to save some weight added by the upgrade. ________________________________ From: Joe Sent: Sun, July 10, 2011 12:42:49 PM Subject: Zenith601-List: Re: First Flight. (Joe) Hi Joe, Before you change something as big and heavy as the landing gear "Spring" you might want to check into the weight and balance impact. With the Zenith spring and Jabiru engine the first W&B came up really nicely with the CG nearly centered in the envelope. Thanks, Pat. For now I am thinking the best thing for me to do is work on my pilot skills and integration with my Zodiac. Yesterday I could barely control the airspeed and attitude and I need to get a handle on that before I can do any real testing. I spent today fixing most of the squawks from yesterday's flight. Perhaps I will fly again tomorrow and see how all the fixes came out. One point of interest. I have a wood propeller and it really needed to have its bolts retorqued after the first flight. Each one took a bout a quarter turn to get back to the desired torque - 18 ft. lbs. in my case. The Sensenich data said this would be necessary but I didn't think it would take so much. Paul Camas, WA XL with one whole hour of flight logged. Paul Before you re torque you should loosen the bolts and let the wood relax and then re torque you will be surprised to here it pop and crack when you do. If you torque it when it is humid the wood swells and then when it is dry they will lose some torque also. In a message dated 7/10/2011 10:54:11 P.M.
