Subject: | final builders log entry |
Hey gang,
Today I made my final builders log entry before printout for the DAR. The airplane
is ready for final inspection (doing and annual) with the Zodiac Checklist
from Zenith. Looks like me and my hangar mate (RV-12) will be calling the DAR
and making a do em both arrangement real soon.
For those who have been watching and encouraging me, it took 3278 hours to scratch
and scrap build this airplane. Now it's time to also get me ready to fly.
Booking some tail dragger time and getting a CFI skills check out. Also will
be booking some time with a fellow ZenVair flyer to get comfortable for that
first flight in my airplane. What a wonderful experience this has been. The next
chapter begins.
So Anne asks how many hours again, times $40 = $131,120 + materials. . . Hey anybody
wanna buy it, let's make a deal ;-)

Congratulations! Best of luck on first flight. I'm thinking, when I get
done I'll have to price my time out at 1950's rate minimum wage.......or
maybe refine the time down to actual hours of making progress, not to
include re-do's, head scratching, etc.

Well done, Ron.
My personal advice to you is don't get too complacent about that first
flight. Mine was last Summer and I can tell you it wasn't as bad as I
feared but it was worse than I hoped. The only real problems were the
rudder wanted to pull to the left (this may not be an issue in your tail
dragger) and the engine wanted to overheat. Fortunately I had lots of
excess horsepower so I could throttle back to keep the engine from
melting down. You may not have that kind of margin with your engine and
weight.
If you would like to discuss anything about the certification or initial
flight test process in a more private setting, please feel free to send
me an email.
Best regards,
Paul
