Has anyone seen anything about the required modificatin kit being necessary
for the Czech Sport Cruiser, a 601XL derivative? The guy in the hanger next
to me would like to know, as he has one.

      Jim,
The wing on the Sportscruiser is already of heavier construction. The
spar caps are 1/4" thicker and there is additional riveting of the spars
      as well.

I suggest that you go over to the next hangar and take a careful look at
the Sport Cruiser's wing structure. There are definite similarities to the
601XL/650, particularly the ribs. But check out the front spar. The spar
caps have 50% greater thickness at the root--yes, that's, right, instead of
0.50" the caps are 0.75" at the roots. The spar cap angle is bent from the
spar cap web, and thus is 0.040 thick, IIRC, rather than 0.032". The rivet
pattern is doubled top and bottom close to the root. And the spar cap
layers taper in thickness and width as you move out the wing. The Sport
Cruiser does not seem to have step changes in the spar caps like the end of
the the 601XL/650 spar cap doubler. The Sport Cruiser center spar is also
50% thicker than the 601XL/650. In addition, there are 2 stringers on the
top of the wing and 1 on the bottom. I haven't looked closely at the rear
spar, but the flap and aileron hinges are not piano or flex hinges. I
cannot tell if the ailerons are balanced. The aileron controls are push rods.

It is clear that while there are significant similarities between the two
designs, there are significant differences. Most importantly, I have not
heard of any Sport Cruiser inflight breakups.

Unless Sport Cruiser's start to break up in flight for unknown reasons, I
imagine that your neighbor can rest easy.
