I like the this new room. You can swing a cat around in here without hitting a
601 builder. Id like to here some comments on my battery set up. Traditionally
there was a battery box over the battery. I didnt put one in, nor do I see the
need for one. This is a modern fully enclosed battery. Leak proof and (according
to Nuckolls) you can drill a hole in it and not only is there nothing to
leak out, it should still work fine. (and there's nothing back there that can
touch the terminals which will have Rubber boots on them) Attached is a pic. My
concern is that an FAA Inspector will not like it and insist on some stupid
fiber glass box (I have one that came with my Fuse kit. By the way. I Plans built
my wings and then switched to partial kits. After seeing the contents of the
partial kit boxes I still consider myself a Plans Builder.. Geoff Heap

Further I don't think that the box would contain a small explosion and blow
out the bottom skin. I don't think it would contain a gas leak. I do think there
would be a lot of Fiber glass shrapnel.....Geoff

Hello Listers:
Our EAA Chapter affiliated flying club ( www.eaa163.com click flying
club link) 1958 Cessna 172 dropped a valve yesterday and hammered a
cylinder. Pilot did great job of returning to field with 4/5's power.
Since engine is at TBO, we are seeking another engine from "0" time
through midtime.
Need a C-145 or a O-300A, B, C, D, E, etc.
If anyone has one or a lead to one, it would be greatly appreciated.

Geoff, this is a very similar concept to what I have
done but I haven't gone through inspection yet so I
have no idea if it will pass or not.
Very nice simple design though.

That looks cool.
My only question is about the rivet bulbs - Is the vibration of the bulbs
against the battery a potential problem? Sure the thing is sealed, but coul
d
the rivets fail from the rubbing or could a crack start on the battery
holder's frame?
Overall it seems like this is a great idea for scratch builders.
Good luck!

Subject: | Snow Load on the top |
I noticed the local 701 that sits forlornly with flat tires out on the ramp
at my airport has developed a slight dip in the top which is I suspect
from the heavy load of snow on it each year. So on my 801 with that
thought in mind I made some 20x50 mm .032 L's for the fueslage top.
Might be worth a passing thought if you plan to park your plane outside.
The std L's don't provide a lot of strength.

The rivets actually just miss the bottom of the battery. They come a little closer
than I meant them to.
Thanks for noticing though. what I'm looking for is criticism. Does anyone know
an FAA ruling stating that a battery box is mandatory. I have not tried to research
that.

I have done the same on mine. I ran "L" angles straight down the center
top-bottom and diagonally on both sides to help with the oil canning. It
really does tighten up all the large areas of unsupported skin.
I suspect it also adds a small amount of structure to the whole airframe.

Lots of mods=lots of extra build time, been there done some so I know. The research
and development seems to take me forever on them! What I am interested in
are any and all mods you all have done to streamline the 701. I have removed the
slats and installed vortex generators on the wing and HZ stabilizer, streamlined
the struts with them faired top and bottom. I haven't done anything with
the area where the HZ Stab. meets the fuselage though. Has anyone done anything
there and if you have, have you noticed any improvement in speed, handling
or any thing else?

Hi Geoff,
There is no requirement for a battery box, but there is an implied
rationale for making whatever electric power device you use secure so
that it doesn't become a hazard to
you or anyone. Secure attachment I think is your case. If it were a wet
battery, a battery box or equal would be logically one answer.
Experimental tag places
options that you have to define. It's probably easier if you look at
the "requirements" as performance-based safety or common sense.

Hello.
I am looking at a 1998 model 701 for sale on Barnstormers. I like it
except that it has an 11 gallon header tank ( and 5.5 gallons in each
wing). I realize that the early models had this arrangement but I would
prefer just wing tanks. How hard would it be to pop open the wings and
substitute 10 gallon wing tanks and then by-pass the 11 gallon header
tank ?
Thanks.

You might consider Hanson Rivet Co.
http://www.hansonrivet.com/w17a.htm
I have purchased 3/32" blind rivets from them and got prompt service. The
rivets were $.08/ea. I got the domed head style. I have used them to fill
misplaced #40 pilot holes.

I have been considering building a kitplane. I have read up on the RV7 and the
CH701. Obviously both are very different aircraft, but each has its advantages
and disadvantages.
One thing I have not been able to find is how many hours it is taking people to
go from parts or sheet metal to the first flight for a 701. On the zenth site
they say 400 hours, but then I found one post saying it took 2650 hours.
Can others who have finished 701's say how many hours build time was needed to
complete the project.
If there is an FAQ to answer this and other newbie questions, just point me to
the URL. I was unable to find one.

I am new to this forum. Why would you not want to archive your posts? I assume
that means they would no longer be searchable. For someone like myself that is
trying to learn more about building a 701, I would think archives would be a
good thing.
