Can anyone explain the pros and cons of CAPACITIVE FUEL PROBES vs. RESISTANCE (float type)? Not real happy with the readings we are getting with the float type now. Have the Zenith suppled floats and Dynon EFIS. I have re-calibrated the gages twice and still getting junk readings. -------- Do not archive Dan Stanton N9801S 99.9% Done and Flying 701-40% done Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=182646#182646

do not archive This may help...... On a previous plane I used the capacitive probes and was pleased with the results. On my 701, which is 90+%, engine running, will taxi under its own power, etc, I am again using this type probe. Once assisted in attempting to calibrate the float-type for another fellow; not a memorable experience. We never got it right! Here's what I did on the 701: Cut the appropriate hole to mount the probe in the approximate location shown by ZAC. Cut the probe length such that the probe came within 1/4" of the bottom of the tank. Once you have the probe ready to install, don't seal it just yet. Then, to actually calibrate the probe, I used a piece of PVC pipe same length as tank depth, with a pipe cap on the bottom end, and the pipe in a vertical position. Putting the probe into the pipe from the top simulates the tank. Filling the pipe to various levels with fuel simulates the various levels of fuel in the tank. You can set "zero" and "span" with your indicator attached using a 12-volt battery. All the calibration can be done on a workbench. I would look carefully to see that the probe is actually "vertical" when the aircraft is level. If it is somewhere other than vertical, simply tilt the test pipe to match the position that the probe will be in when installed. On the previous plane the tank held 12 gallons. After my bench-calibration I installed the probe and filled the tank by pouring in one gallon at a time, and checking the fuel gauge. Tracked perfectly! You really need to use clean 12 volts (from a battery), not a battery charger, to power the probe/indicator while calibrating. Most capacitive probes have documentation showing various installation methods. It is possible to mount the probe in one top corner, and bend the probe such that the stem extends to the far diagonal bottom corner, thereby mking the probe as long as possible. The added length increases the "span" and could make your reading more accurate. Westach makes a 270-degree, 3-inch, indicator which works well for this. Others may have a better method, but this worked well for me. Regards, Zed/701/R912/etc The disclaimer here is to "watch for sparks whilst connecting/disconnecting the battery"

When getting our inspection done, the DAR went into great length on the things we cannot do with an Experimental. One of them was no glider and banner towing. Stan, I believe the section you are looking for is in the builders section of the Zenith website. It is in the photo assembly guides, final assembly section, called "doors". When you open this file, it shows it as being "Final Assembly - Door Section 2. This is where it shows tracing the door opening onto plywood and using the plywood, with nails installed 5mm in from the edges, as a guide for forming the bent frame. Hope this helps. Craig: Thanks for the info. Saturday I lifted up one of my binders and the CD fell out. Did a Google search on it and discovered the Section 2. Don't know how I had missed it before as I thought I had printed everything out. The Section 2 is for doors that have metal bottoms but am assuming it will work on the all plastic ones. Appreciate your response as I was really at wit's end.
