Subject: | Is this wing mod " do-able " |
There are a lot of talented, and enterprising builders on this list, and I was
wondering if anybody had ever considered building a Zenith 711, by adding a second,
albeit shorter wing on the bottom of the 701 making it into a biplane.
I am not an engineer, aeronautical or otherwise, but I am thinking that with this
type of modification, we would no longer be having any discussions regarding
the strengthening, or lengthening, of the wings " a la " 750.
I would also expect that there would be an improvement as far as the glide ratio
is concerned, not to mention the wing loading and increasing the gross weight.
As I mentioned previously, I am in no way an engineer, so all comments or ideas,
negative or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have just completed, and painted my work table. A big thank you, to all
of you who have taken the time, to send me your recommendations and tips. I built
it slightly wider ( 62" ), so that there would be enough room to store the
12' sheets flat on the two lower shelves, making it easier to manipulate them
by myself, since I work, and live alone.

My first thought: how would you get into the 711? There's no where to position
the low wing except below the door. To make the cockpit accessible, you would
need the root section of the low wing to be strong enough to climb into the
cockpit. That means additional structure = added weight = poor performance.
I suppose anything is doable, but I'm not sure you would have any benefit to such
a mod. That's just my two cents!

Hey nice table!
As for the biplane, of course you can make anything you want and you could even
make it work well. But remember that it will no longer be a CH701. I would start
from scratch before I'd modify the airframe that much. I have to admit a
STOL biplane would be really cool.......

The owner of Kitfox once famously made a custom Kitfox biplane. A search in
the archives should find it.
There are many things to consider such as the wing loading, center of lift,
structural attachment points and control surface changes that will need to
be considered for the project.

Not to worry John, I have my hands full with an almost standard CH701 :)
But it would be cool!

Hi Craig,
Did you inspect the 1998 701 yet?
I am curious as to whether the gross is 900 lbs or 1100 lbs?

If you are referring to the 701 in New York state listed on Barnstormers
(there is a 1998 701 in MA also listed) I did more than inspect it - I
bought it. Although the 912ULS is from 1998 the 701 is from 2003.
The 912 needs the slipper clutch, valve spring retainer and improved starter
service bulletins and sprag clutch circlip service instruction so I'll be
dropping it off at LEAF in Wisconsin as I drive from NY to UT. Then I'll
stick the 701 in the hanger with my two 601XL kits and start working on
prepping the 601s for sale.
Here is one way of describing my reasons for switching from a 601XL to a
701:

Hi Craig,
Yes, I was referring to the 701 you were referring to... :) ... in your message.
I assumed (wrongly) that the engine AND the kit were 1998.
Welcome to the world of 701.
I am building my second 701 down here in Alabama....
