Dear List members, My son and I are building a 701 in South Africa, one of my tasks is to handle the paper work. We have to apply for a "build number", which we did last December, but they cannot find the application. I re-applied, now they ask that the application must be accompanied by "a design criteria as specified in South African Civil Aviation Technical Standards Part 24.01.2.A.2" Does anyone have an idea what this may be? Any South Afriacns that have discovered this? Another of my tasks is to find an engine. I look forward to hear what other list members have on their 701's. Good building! Coen van Wyk

Do Not Archive I would like to know what the empty weight and gross will be? Anyone know? I would think that if you gained 150 lbs usable then it would be a plus, but if it's just 40-50 lbs, then I don't think I would be interested. I saw the prototype last August, and it does look a good bit stronger. Tommy Walker in Alabama N8701 57 Hours Working on wings for second 701..

Coen, in most countries copies of the specification pages showing the design criteria including the 3D outline sketches and the loading derating formula and COG and weight information found in the beginning of the drawing set is what you send in to the authorities in order to get a permit and a building/repair project number. SACA will probably also want to know the serial number of the kit or of the drawings (same number) and the official type designation of the plane. Note that you are probably building a Canadian designed aircraft called the CH701SP. Good luck, Max ________________________________ From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of ext Coen van Wyk Sent: 20 May, 2008 14:28 To: zenith701801-list@matronics.com Subject: Zenith701801-List: South African Civil Aviation Authority Dear List members, My son and I are building a 701 in South Africa, one of my tasks is to handle the paper work. Hi there, Im planning to build a 701, Ive seen the R-2100 Turbo, 80 HP engine as a good alternative, and they ve recommended a 62 diameter propeller. Would it be ok such an engine/prop combination? Thanks a lot !! Subject: 701 wiring questions
    From: "Mike Hoffman" <mhoffman9@tampabay.rr.com>
I have several electrical questions I need help with. I am wiring a 701 with an EXP bus and the battery has a external solenoid relay (under rt seat) . I do not have the Rotax engine yet,(100hp) but want to get as far as I can before I get the engine. 1st question. The EXP manual says "if you are planning to use electronic ignition modules requiring battery power (Rotax does) it is essential that to run a power source directly to the battery and provide a back up power source from a second battery"."Be sure to wire your aircraft so that the engine will continue to run even with the master switch off." Am I correct to interpret this that I need a fused wire to go from the battery to the ign switch then to the engine electronic module? If so, what size wire and fuse should I use? Would a in line fuse holder be ok? 2nd question. Is everyone else with a 701 running 2 batteries? 3rd question. I am not clear on the size of shielded wires for the mags. Looks like it should be 0.75 metric size. I am guessing that would equal 18 ga. Mike H Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=184011#184011

Zed Oh Zed, this is not like you, I've ALWAYS counted on YOU to be up to date , precise, articulate, witty, sarcastic, wry and all those other things. How can you DO that if you have no clue what we're talking about??? :>) It appears the 750 is a 701 built for real Americans, you know Tall guys and full size like me, longer wing ,same chord I understand, wider, taller ---firewall forward is 601 stuff so part count for inventory is down a little. Can use 0-200, Corvair, 3300 (maybe I guess). was designed around 1320# Sport Pilot rules. Ok Zed, get on the stick and find out the rest of the story and report back to us. Mike, the Rotax 912 serires engines DO NOT require battery voltage to run. They have an enclosed self sustaining electrical system that is not connected to the aircarft charging circuit. The only electrical connections from the engine to the electrical system is through the voltage regulator/rectifier and of course the starter. The reference to the battery powered ignition system would be more along the lines of a Subaru or Corvair installation. The only reason to run dual batteries in a Rotax powered 701 would be if you are concerned about loosing your radios or lighting etc in the event of a charging circuit fault. As for the wires to the "Mags" they are to ground the ignition to shut down the engine. 18 Ga would likely be fine. If you use shielded Mag wires, be sure to ground only one end of the shielding. If you ground both ends, they shielding has no effect. Hope this helps answer your questions. Rotax ignition does not require battery power to operate. Ignition is separate from your electrical system (master switch). Brian http://www.701builder.com ..."if you are planning to use electronic ignition modules requiring battery power (Rotax does)

do archive I should hope that if one turns the MASTER off that everything will turn off. There are two "mag" switches which kill the "A" & "B" modules on the Rotax, as with the O-200, etc. My three set of 701 plans don't indicate the need for a second battery. I'm at the office, not near a 912 at the moment, but maybe a DVD from HomeBuilt Help is in order. The 912, fresh out of the box, is relatively easy to wire. The biggest problem is that the instructions are translated from German to English and there is some "re-reading" required to grasp the intent of some instructions. For instance, where an English-speaking North American might say, "Torque it to 150 inch-pounds," the instructions may state, "To 150 inch-pounds torque must be applied". Says the same, just isn't the way you are accustomed. That's a poor example, too, and my apologies to all whose mother tounge isn't English!!! I'd say get the DVD from Jon. Regards, Zed

Zed Smith said "I should hope that if one turns the MASTER off that everything will turn off." Zed, I don't think you want the engine to shut down when you kill the master. The purpose of the master is to remove battery power from the electrical system in the event of a failure and to provide a safe state for the electrical system when the plane is not in use. The Rotax 912 should NOT quit if you turn your master off in flight. Doug MacDonald CH-701 Scratch Builder NW Ontario, Canada Do not Archive

I've heard that a 701 with a Jab 2200 is a little weak on take off and climb. I don't know what an R-2100 is, but since it is spec ed at 80-hp and a 62" prop I guess it is direct drive, so pretty much a 2200 Jab.
