Subject: | Re: Header tank venting |
Not sure what you mean, the header tank vent goes from the top of the
header to the top of one of the main tanks. The nice thing is you can
be turning and banking, etc. The header can be getting intermittent
feed, but still provide a constant source of fuel for the engine.

You WILL need to take the wings off to replace the plastic on the roof. Lots of
the top plastic is covered by the aluminum that blends the wing to the top. Install
a window between these to pieces. Change it in an hour when need be. You
can't see through aluminum anyway so any plastic under it is useless as a window
and there is lots of it. I found it quite a chore to fit these pieces snug,
nicely, to the plastic without great care of not scratching it. Believe me
if I had it to do again it would be an aluminum top with a window installed between
the slopes.

Subject: | Re: 701 Flying Qualities - Turbulence |
For the size and weight the 701 is amazingly good in turbulence. Certainly not
a 172, but far better then a Kolb or other large winged lightly loaded ultralight
type airplane. Surprisingly easy to land in a cross wind too. When you get
on the ground though the cross wind will want to skid you sideways pretty easily
if it is strong. Keep the upwind wing down with the flaperons.

I see one model for the 701 at http://olivier.faivre70.online.fr/
Are there others and how useful (including Olivier's) are they?
What are folks' general opinion of X-Plane?

Subject: | Re: X-Plane and 701 |
I have owned X-Plane 8 for a couple of years, and just bought a license for
ver. 9. I like X-Plane. I used it a lot to practice instrument flying
before I took my checkride. I have a 601 model that I bought a couple of
years ago. Unfortunately, the guy who wrote it sold his models to someone
else who is not interested in the 601. The 601 model works on ver 8, but I
haven't tried it on ver. 9. The new owner would no longer sell the 601 when
I last checked with him.
I also have a freebie model of a motorized glider that has a Dynon EFIS in
the panel. Someday, when I have time on my hands, after I've built my real
601, I plan to write my own 601XL model, including the Dynon.
What's neat about X-Plane is that the flight models are much closer to real
aerodynamics than other simulators, at least that's what they claim. I
haven't used their scenery much. Most of my "flights" were in the clouds in
Flathead Valley, navigating in a (near) rectangular pattern of VOR radials
in their C-172 model.

Subject: | Left Turning Tendency in the Flare |
I've got about 80 hours in my 701 with a 100 HP Rotax.
As others have said here, it lands much better with some power. I've tried a number
of times to do a nearly zero power approach and never get a reasonable landing.
I don't mind the firm arrival so much as my plane's tendency to yaw to
the left right at touchdown. I looked at the "flywithgus.com" video and noticed
that his firm landing was also accompanied by a left turn.
Because of the nose high approach attitude (even with flaps down) I've thought
about approaching from left of centerline so that when I do hit the runway I'll
be about straight. I do the shortest landings (under control) with speed of
about 45-50 at the threshold. Any slower and I'm am very nose high and lots
of left yaw. Much faster and I use too much runway (actually there are often
no runways, just small clearings).
Have others noticed this, or is my plane just a bit out of sorts in this configuration?

This is actually a Highlander by Just Aircraft. I fly with this guy, Steve. There is another posting that I put on youtube that Steve photographed ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=PTiUds5ms34 ). The 701 lands shorter than the Highlander (if you are willing to approach slow enough) and it always takes off in less space. If you watch where Steve turns around in this video clip, you'll see that I use less space in the 701. But the 701 is, I think, more difficult to land really short because of the very high AOA (and very high power) needed to get the slowest speed at touchdown. I won't do these steep hill tops in my 701. I've put the tail into the dirt on level ground. On a steep hill I would want to add a tail wheel to the 701. And, these are not Steve's first set of wings on that Highlander!

I noticed a loose spring dangling by his tail wheel in one of the hill
landing videos. Tell him to look for it on his next preflight ;-)

He noticed it when he reviewed the video. It came off on one of the landings that
day, so it wasn't missed on a preflight.
