Subject: | Re: X-Plane and 701 |
I have never even seen X Plane. I have MS Flight Sim X ,any idea how it compares.
I have a CH701 for it but when you put realism to full its un-flyable, so I
use a Savannah model instead. :( Guess It works out the same. How is the 701
in X Plane?

It definitely happens on our 701 too. I've run off the left side of the runway
a couple of times. If you find out what is causing it, let us know.

number of times to do a nearly zero power approach and never get a reasonable
landing. I don't mind the firm arrival so much as my plane's tendency to yaw
to the left right at touchdown. I looked at the "flywithgus.com" video and noticed
that his firm landing was also accompanied by a left turn.

about approaching from left of centerline so that when I do hit the runway I'll
be about straight. I do the shortest landings (under control) with speed
of about 45-50 at the threshold. Any slower and I'm am very nose high and lots
of left yaw. Much faster and I use too much runway (actually there are often
no runways, just small clearings).

Craig,
The plans are light. Not alot of info at all.
Leave the protective cover on.
I layed it on top of the fuse and traced out sides, I cut to the inside of this
line for a perfect fit.
I cut the rear for good rivet clearance and edge distances.
The front edge will overlap the frame so you will have a decent edge distance for
riveting.Do not drill
front untill you install windshield.
I did all cuts on the workbench using a straight edge and scoring it a few times?with
a utility knife.
I then folded down the cut for a clean break. If it doesn't fold fairly easy, score
it again.
Once cut, I started drilling in place. I taped it so it wouldn't move, marked a
line and drilled
using a fan as used in the pictures.
If you search the archives in the old zenith list for ruruny, you will find lots
of advice from other
builders on this install, windshield etc.
One question that was never answered and never in the plans was the rivets on the
gusset, and the tube connections
at the front of the frame.?Whether to drill and rivet thru these. I just let the
lexan lay on top of these rivets as I felt the
lexan is not part of the structure(see pics again).
http://www.701builder.com/00fuselagehome.htm
The brace goes on the diagonal by drilling to diagonal first using a right angle
drill. I trimed the bottom of the brace even with
diagonal. Clecoed it on to diagonal, took covering off lexan, clecoed lexan down
and drilled down thru lexan thru brace.

.....Does anyone have any advice on, or photos of installing the top Lexan window

Yep, I have it too. I always land with no power, and about half the time there
is a definite yaw to the left just at touchdown.
My no flap landings approach at 60, and pull power at the threshold. Most are ok,
but if I hold it off to a very slow airspeed, it yaws left.
My flap down landings approach at 50 with no power, and are pretty steep - almost
floating - angle. Ground run is very short, but if I hold it off too long,
I get the left yaw there too.
When I try it at altitude, slowing to almost nothing, it doesn't happen.
I thought I was the only one, and blamed it on the wind coming out of the canyon
on the left side of the runway.

a 172, but far better then a Kolb or other large winged lightly loaded ultralight

on the ground though the cross wind will want to skid you sideways pretty easily
if it is strong. Keep the upwind wing down with the flaperons.

This weekend I took my 701 up in 20 mph winds and on crosswind landing I
let it drift me sideways. I definetly need to work on that.

I have a theory -- The gear on the 701 has a lot of forward/aft movement available.
When the nose is high at touchdown it moves the gear forward quite a bit.
Any asymmetry in either the weight distribution or the gear could cause a turning
tendency that is mechanical rather than aerodynamic in its origin.
I am going to try to get my wife to film some landings from directly in front of
the plane as I land to see if I can determine what is happening. When I suggested
this to her last night she said "well, at least I'll know which way to
run so you don't hit me"

Women...gotta love em! Sorry couldn't resist. Let us know what you find about the
landing tendency.
