I think people discount the light bar idea, it works really well and is very convenient. Especially since it is easily removable. I leave it on all the time though. It looks cool as well, and I have had a lot of comments at the airport when people see it. Not to mention favorable comments over the radio from jealous pilots holding short when they see how well I am lighting the runway on final. When I built my Kitfox I put halogen wingtip lights in it. Personally I was never happy with them. They were difficult to align, and I never did get good runway illumination. Putting on the light bar worked great. The lights are big, they are close to the fueslage and probably well inside the turbulated air along the bottom so they don't produce a lot of drag. With the big halogens I can aim the plane and illuminate the runway all the way on final. Reflected light off the belly easily illuminates the ground under the plane on short final which really helps in the tail dragger at night. Anybody who has landed a taildragger at night will know exactly what I mean, since it can be a hair raising feeling flaring into a dark void when you can't see over the nose. I think in a trigear it will be even better. I welded the light bar together myself in an evening, it took a LOT less time to put together than fitting the lenses to the tips for the wingtip lights, were I to do it all over I would have never put in the tip lights to begin with. I think if I built a Lancair I would probably not think about a light bar, but on a utility plane ... I think they are a great solution.
