Yeah you can buy a lot of straps for next to nothing at places like
Menard's, Home Depot, etc. You'll find after the initial wrapping
after the skin has bent once that it's a lot easier on second/third
wrappings.
Carefull when you loosen those straps too, there's a point of
looseness where it basically just slips out of the ratchet. That
happened to me with a wing leading edge, and I almost took
to wearing a diaper after that :)

I believe I'd be more concerned about the nose skin trailing edge lineup
with the spar cap. Nose ribs primarily form the nose skin curvature, rather
than providing structural rigidity, which the skin curvature provides. Keep
the straps positioned right over the ribs, use at least 7 straps, pull them
up evenly and gradually, and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Subject: | Skinning elevator |
Thanx Ben and Jeff. The advice worked great! Just eased off on
the straps which allowed the sheet metal to conform nicely to the nose
ribs (with a bit of tender caressing) popped in few cleecos on the
nose ribs to hold in place, retightened straps and proceeded with
rest of skin in the normal fashion. The extra straps distributed
the load nicely over the skin which resulted in a near perfect airfoil.
I just dont think my neighbors were too impressed when I ran up and
down the street with my cleecoed elevator held over my head, laughing
deliriously.
Up for a couple more rookie questions?
1) Had to move the first drill hole on each nose ribs as 10mm as
managed to hit dimples. What is best way to fill an unwanted hole
in the skin? I assume automotive aluminum body filler doesnt cut in
on an aircraft?
2) Final tolerance check was great except that the trailing tips of
both outboard ribs are up about 2mm. The rest of the elevator is
dead flat. Seems to fall within the 6mm tolerance allowed for
twist, but its not really twist. Im assuming this is OK (I guess
thats why Im installing a trim tab) but appreciate your thoughts.

Subject: | Place to stay in Oshkosh |
If anyone is looking for a place to stay in Oshkosh, my neighbor is offering
her home. They have moved into a new home and the house is up for sale. It's
a fairly new home in a subdivision with 3 bedrooms, 2 full bath, remodeled
basement, air conditioned, close to the airport They moved out 2 weeks ago
and it's very clean and up for sale. Full laundry. Lots of parking space and
you can party with the neighbors, a bunch of Viggen and 601 XL builders!
$100 per day with a $700 minimum. If you are interested call Melissa at
920-410-3282 or you can call me at 920-237-1450 and I will set it up for
you.

I searched the archive but didn't find anything about door locks.
If anyone has added them, could you tell me how you did it?
