I plan on using the zigzag pattern, but I can't decide on 3m tape or rivets. I
like the idea of rivets better as it feels more permanent to me. It also seems
that it would stiffen up the tail for those less then perfect take offs and landing?
Would putting a crimp or three in each one on the leg facing in, after
assembly help to tension the skin out, is it necessary? I also plan on false
ribs in the wings.

Subject: | Diagonal bracing on Fuselage |
Hi John:
The other day one of my EAA Advisors was looking at my, finally finished,
701. I DID NOT put any bracing into the fuselage so will probably have a
lot of oil canning. Indeed I have been taxing it around the grass strip and
can hear it from time to time. Anyway, my Advisor suggested that I simply
glue 1/2 inch Styrofoam to the inside surfaces and all the noise will go
away, or so he says. He estimated the total weight to be less than 3 pounds
if I coated the inside of the entire fuselage.
Don't know if this will work or has ever been done but is an interesting
suggestion. He suggests that it would probably weigh less, cost less, and
be much more effective then cross bracing.

Hello List;
I am now well into my 701, wings and tail group complete and
hanging from the ceiling of my shop. I have a question regarding bracing the
fuselage sides. Between the "L"s are large areas of sheet metal which I
expect will oil can in flight. Anyone noticed this or am I just a worry
wart?

Hey George:
My concern would be flammability. Doesn't Styrofoam burn readily and
emit fumes?
Search the archives and check Chuck Dietrich's well thought out and
simple method of curing oil canning

Some builder posted the fact that he used the standard ells, but rather than using
rivets he used two-part epoxy. As I recall, he cut each so that it reached
just to the horizontal stringers, but did not overlap, and put a thick coat
of the epoxy on the ell, put it in place and held it there with a couple of wood
sticks of appropriate length. The epoxy doesn't take long to set.
If he cleaned the inside with a swipe of MEK it'll probably stay very well.
This was four or five years ago, and it seems that the builder had several hours
on the plane when he added this. Reported that it stopped the rattle.
This was at about the time that I had mine sitting on the gear without any diagonals
whatsoever.
I had cut a few to length and had Clecoes inserted, but discovered quickly that
reaching the rear-most portion was all but impossible through the access cover
underneath.....therefore I have first two forward areas done with rivets and
none aft of that. I may cut some standard-size inspection holes near the rear
and finish with the epoxy method once I get it flying.

Zed

I added false ribs to both the fuselage and wings on my project. Seems to
reduce the deflection quite a bit - haven't gotten the plane together yet so
don't know about the results in flight / taxi etc.. But the whole thing
made me feel better. On the fuselage I went with diagonal brace design ala
the Zenith Demonstrator. For the ribs / L braces I went to my local
heating and cooling shop - converted the 20 mm sides to inches and had a
whole bunch bent out of "dead soft" aluminum stock - thought that I might
get even more of the harmonics out with dead soft material. Anybody that
wants pics email me.

A question for those of you flying with an AOA or LRI installed in your 701:
how useful is it? It would seem that in the 701 (with lift to burn) it would
be less important than in a more conventional aircraft.
My EFIS has inputs for an AOA probe. But the wings are closed up so I'm
wondering if it is worth the trouble to install and plumb a probe.
