I had Zenith make me .016 L angles and installed them using 3M tape. After installation I crimped the L angles. If I had it over to do again, I would run the L angles all the way to the vertical fuse L's and install one rivet on each end of the .016 angles where the touch the vertical L's just to be sure that the cross bracing L's cannot come loose and fall onto the control cables. That being said, the tape has held fine through 120 hours and I only hear oil canning when I am slipping or doing some such cross control maneuver. I also installed L angles in the wings between the ribs. My experience is that the flat bottom of the wings are more prone to oil canning than the curved tops. I installed the Ohio LRI in my 701. It is bent back to a riduculous degree and I still don't have it calibrated to stall at the Red/White line. I like having it, especially in steep, slow turns and such maneuvers, but it certainly isn't necessary in such a high lift design. Subject: Speaking of covers
Bruce's Custom Covers now makes covers for the 701. QSP was handing out flyers at Arlington and had a sample. I also received the same flyer from Bruce's in the mail. Doug at QSP said they came up and measured a 701 at QSP. If you have never see Bruce's work they are a thing of beauty but *heavy*. Anyway the flyer lists the cover at $335, an "extended" cover for $435, engine cover $255, propeller cover (2 blade) $185, wing covers (pair) $425, Empennage cover $490, light-weight travel canopy cover $290. For a little more they will put your tail number on the covers. The fact that they offer a "travel" cover shows that the standard cover is heavy enough that you probably won't be taking it with you on trips. The flyer offers a 10% discount "when you mention this flyer, limit 30 days". I received the same discount when I ordered my 601 cover at SnF a few years ago. 800-777-6405 www.aircraftcovers.com (the 701 covers are not listed) -- Craig (just a customer of Bruce's)

Do not archive I vote two lists. Had a 601, sold it and now building a 701. Still some interest in 601 if I have info on it or if item of special interest shows up but most of interest now centered on the building of 701 hence my favoring two lists. Stan N701VG

I too have added 0.016 false ribs in wings (except outermost bay) and 0.025 zig-zag bracing in fuselage sides (still building). Used homemade tools from www.ch701.com (modified shortened version of Murray's "Home Depot" wooden brake, homemade crimping pliers, and Alfa Knife). Used A4 rivets same pitch as existing wing ribs and fuselage vertical "L" angles. The ends of the fuselage zig-zag angles pick up rivets in the longerons (same as the aft-most diagonal "L"s between horizontal stabilizer attach points). If I had to do it over, I would have also added a false rib in the wing outermost bay, top skin. May still do that. :-) Ralph N701SA (reserved) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey A Beachy" <beachyjeff@juno.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 9:28 AM Subject: Re: Zenith701801-List: Diagonal bracing on Fuselage > <beachyjeff@juno.com> > > I had Zenith make me .016 L angles and installed them using 3M tape. > After installation I crimped the L angles. Hello Listers: Members of the Zenith-list are revisiting the question of; "should the lists have been split up or should there be just one Zenith list". I have been asked to post the same question to the 701 list. Please vote if you favor going back to one list or keeping the separate lists. I have found 4 lists clumsy and unnecessary and am for one list myself. Regards, Randy, Las Vegas

Leave it alone I like it. You can click all the way over to the Zenith list and read my reply there. I too don't care to sort through 601 specific things, but the Zenith list is still there for general stuff... perfect! Personally, I love the STOL only list. While I support peoples rights to build and fly what ever they want, the amateurish re-design of the 601 was driving me nuts. I am perfectly happy having this STOL only list. Doug MacDonald CH-701 Scratch Builder NW Ontario, Canada DO NOT ARCHIVE --- On Tue, 7/15/08, Randy L. Have enjoyed the peace and quiet of 701 builders; not even one mention of green Scotch Bright pads. Let us continue with the split Lists for a few more months, at the least. Regards to all, Zed

For their Rotax 912 has anyone built their own synchronizer (basically a double-ended differential manometer) instead of buy a commercial kit? How well did it work? Looks like it should be as good (or better with the longer scale). Something like this: http://www.powerchutes.com/manometer.asp -- Craig
