Subject: Zenith701801-List: Should the lists have been split?
Hello Listers:
Members of the Zenith-list are revisiting the question of; "should the
lists have been split up or should there be just one Zenith list".
I have been asked to post the same question to the 701 list.
Please vote if you favor going back to one list or keeping the separate
lists.
I have found 4 lists clumsy and unnecessary and am for one list myself.

Randy, Las Vegas

Subject: | Re: AOA/LRI on a 701? |
I built one up from a rod of plexiglass using a long drill and a sensitive air
gauge, and trialled it for a few flights.
I had to set the probe at a much lower angle than expected, and although it operated
as supposed to I really wouldnt want it on my 701.
There is such a wide envelope of airspeed and AOA available and I dont see the
gauge has any compensation for A/C weight and flaps down conditions, these variables
have a huge effect on when and where the plane ends up.
I'd like to be more specific but having tried it out conclude its best left out
of the 701 / 801 cockpit

Although builders of the 601's and the 701-801 builders belong to the same Zenith
family, they are like most families, two completely different individuals.
Their needs, their likes and dislikes, should justify each having their own list.
Although I regularly read both, my personal opinion is that they must stay
separated.

Larry, good luck finding something that big from Radio Shack. Digikey might be
a more likely source if they even have one that big. Lockwood or Leaf might
be your only choice but I'm betting a genuine Rotax cap will be pricy (everything
else Rotax is).
Wherever you get it from, make sure you connect it up the right way as electrolytic
capacitors tend to explode when connected backwards. Not a big deal if a
little half inch by 3/4 inch capacitor pops but something as big as the Rotax
capacitor could be dangerous. At the very least a big mess.

Since I've been on this list, this is at least the third time we've had
this discussion. I thought/hoped the last one was it.
Here's what you do. For those who want both the 601 and 701/801 dialog,
then please sign up for both lists. It's that simple, now you have them
combined. Otherwise sign up on either one you want and they are not
combined. Where's the problem?

I also much prefer to have the 701 list split off.
Separately, has anyone done timed full throttle climbs at different
airspeeds to calculate Vx and Vy? What numbers did you get? I still have
to do this as part of my phase 1 flight testing but I am curious as to
whether or not everyone gets the same numbers or if there is variability.

I have given up on finding ethanol free 92 octane in my area. Ethanol
content has been 5% to 7% around here. I used fuel injection lines and
have an ACS gascolator approved for auto fuel. I keep the plane hangared
and have never found water in my fuel. (Perhaps that will change when I
park outside at Oshkosh.) I have had no issues with my 912ULS and ethanol
and, frankly, don't worry much about it anymore.

Subject: | Re: 10% ethanol & 912 |
Hi.
Here, in Brazil, we've been adding ethanol to our automotive gas for decades, and
I must say that, in the beggining, there were a lot of troubles like corrosion
(remember that ethanol is hidrated) and malfunctions that have been corrected
with the development of new techs. Today's cars run very fine and trusty with
our almost 25% ethanol fuel, or any mix of gas/ethanol (the local FLEX technology
adopted by Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Renault, Fiat
and others). Theres no auto gas for sale without ethanol here, so we have to
run our aero engines on AVGAS.
Many pilots risk themselves filling the tanks with local hi-octane auto gas, and
some of them say that the ethanol added means no problems and outputs higer
power.
In fact, what we can see is a lot of ultralight crashes due to engine failure,
and many of those linked to auto gas use.
We must remember that today's injection system and engines that can run either
on pure gas or 100% ethanol were specifically developed for it.
Although ethanol delivers more power, the compression rate of cylinders must be
higher, the materials employed must be corrosion-free and there are other specs
to observe, as we learned. I witnessed all this decades' process and know how
many problems one will experience just adding ethanol without any modifications.
So, if an engine's factory says it's for AVGAS , for me this means NO ethanol.
And, think : we can trust the petrol company and the field deliverers, but what
about the gas stations that have both tanks of gas and ethanol, side by side,
one product more valuable than other, and that can be mixed together without
any visual effect?
Here we have many planes flying on 100% ethanol, but their engines have been changed
to. And face to the oil prices and the stablishment of a global vegetal
source fuel industry, I think that what happened to auto engines will do to aero
ones, and soon all factories will be delivering engines that can run on both
fuels, and any percent of each one, like my brand new GM pickup!
But we have to wait.
No experiences with my plane and my life.
Still on AVGAS untill new techs come from Rotax and others.

It seems that the 601 list died after the split, but the 701/801 list has
chugged along in a low key way, focusing mainly on building rather than
religion, politics or money.
Unfortunately I think one just has to let the one list thing die.

I agree, split lists!
I personally dislike people (that seem to be in abundance on the 601 list)
that feel that they have to give their answer for every frigging question
posted. How the heck do they get anything done, they are always spouting off how
much they know. And to a lot of people reading, it becomes apparent how much
they do not know.

Hello, all
How have you copied a hole pattern from one part to a new part, without
damaging (i.e., making them bigger, oval) the existing holes?
In my case, the wing ribs have already been drilled to A4 size, and I am
going to discard the old skin.
I think the least laborious way of doing this would be to back-drill the
skin, from inside the wing.
But how do I make sure I won't enlarge the holes on the ribs?
Thanks in advance for your comments / suggestions.

How about a transfer punch?

Or just search www.harborfreight.com for item number 3577-2VGA.
Remember that pulled rivets do expand in their holes. So some enlargement of
the existing holes is tolerable. I think there is something in the Zenith
construction standards about this.
