Subject: | Re: Re - Question about fuel flow from only one tank? |
The C150 vent has a very specific location and orientation to work correctly. It
is also permissible to have vented caps on both tanks.
I normally switch fuel depending on what passenger loading is, if solo drain from
left side first and use both for landings anytime the tank is less than 1/4.
I have had the engine temporarily shutdown when flying on a 1/4 or less tank
if the nose is down or flying unbalanced rudder.
Only incident I had with uneven fuel in the 701 was when after flying 3/4 hr from
full tanks, I noted the left gauge reading 1/4 and the right gauge reading
full. Had a moment to think about this, if i had a fuel leak in the left then
thats the one to switch to before all that fuel is gone. however, from what i
could see of the trailing edges of the ailerons, there seemed to be droplets of
something on the right wing. I switched to feeding off the right side, upon
landing found a rather large hole where the filler cap should be. Seems that starting
flight with full tanks can start a suction that continues to siphon all
the fuel across from the good tank to keep the other one full. I have now chained
the caps so I cannot leave them sitting on the slat gap. Also dont let others
around to chat while refueling. Yes I got the cap back, glad the vent was
painted yellow so I could see it waiting for me back at the threshold on the
grass runway!

I am used to a bit of security when I sit in a plane and am going to install a
harness. Has anyone out there installed a 4 point harness rather than the Zenith
lap and sash belt in their 701 or 801?
Now I am actually at that stage I find myself designing a roll cage suitable for
a racing car rather than an attachment that would suit the 701.
Where do you secure the shoulder straps without over engineering the baggage shelf?
Thanks :?

George I too would be very interested in seeing the pictures or drawings. I am
at that stage.
Thanks

Yep, mine is a four point. I used a piece of aluminum flat stock, 3" X
1/8" I think. Run it all the way across the front of the baggage
shelf. Then take another piece of the same and "T" it from the front
center to the rear and bend it 90 degrees up for an inch or two. Of
course you do this underneath the baggage shelf. Rivet or bolt it in
several places. Then bolt your belts down. I feel a lot better with
my setup than the original design of 3 points. You can get your aluminum
flat stock at Lowe's or Home Depot. I always thought that their
aluminum was cheap stuff. But one time when I was in the store I had
them call the supplier and check, it is 6063 T5. It's good all around
aluminum with plenty of strength for general use.
Take care, Larry N1345L

I sent this to the wrong Zenith list, so I will try again.
I have two wing tanks and no header tank. I have a cutoff valve for
each tank. I will take off on a tank as long as it is over half full.
I switch to the lesser full tank for cruise. I land with the fullest
tank if one is less than half full. Unporting the fuel tank pickup
during nose down and especially a side slip for a crosswind landing is
very unlikely. Only when one tank has been filled to the brim, will I
open both valves to transfer a bit of fuel to the lesser tank.
Switching in flight both valves are open, but only momentarily.

Subject: | Shoulder Harness attachment |
Scratch,
The only change I made to my harness design to strengthen it was to add
plates inside/under the center seat belt attachment points to which I
attached 1/8" stainless cables to the opposite corners of the bottom of the
fus about 2' behind the seats. I have seen a situation where a very sudden
stop caused the center part of the seat to buckle, so I knew it needed to be
reinforced. My 701 kit was from 2004. I think that a rear plate for the
center seat belt attachment point now comes with the newer kits, but still
feel that this assembly needs to be anchored to the corner of fus to help
prevent it from buckling.

Les

Subject: | Re: Re - Question about fuel flow from only one |
tank?
My 701 has 4 10-gal wing tanks but I have had no occasion to use the outer
two yet. The wing root fuel control valves on each wing allow me to select
inside or outside tanks or shut them both off. Because of this I can drain
any one tank or drain two tanks at once, one from each wing. The fuel flows
from each valve into its own filter. The lines come together in the
gascolator, finally the fuel goes through and an auxiliary pump (which I
normally leave off), before going up to the 912 engine.
To avoid the possibility of forgetting to switch tanks, I usually allow the
fuel to drain from both inside tanks at the same time. The inside tanks
often drain at different rates (but not always). I have notices that the
right side often drops down more than the left. However, with this fuel flow
configuration, unless I have a clogged line or am in weird attitudes, with
both valves open, I do not see how the fuel will stop flowing into the
engine if one tank runs dry. On one occasion I had under 1/2 gal in the
right tank and an almost full left tank and did not feel it was necessary to
cut off my right tank because I knew fuel had draining from my left tank,
indicating it wasn't clogged and left tank would siphon down when needed.
Is there anything wrong with this logic?

Les: Liquids seek their own level. Without some external force acting
on the fuel, I see no way that fuel would not continue flowing even if
one wing tank were empty. Fuel from the other tank would flow to the
empty tank in order to equalize levels. This assumes there is no
plugged line coming from the full tank (or valve turned off).
I have noticed that in my hanger, one tank will have more fuel than the
other just sitting. I got a level and measured and found that there was
a difference of two inches on the fuel tank height due to variation in
the floor. This would cause fuel to move to the lower wing and thus
unbalance the tanks.
This is my story and I'm sticken to it!
